Finders keepers false in many court cases of lost and mislaid
Law differs on when a finder may claim property. If the owner is unknown and the item is truly lost, the finder may own it against others. If the item is mislaid or left in a public place, the custodian or owner may reclaim it, and the finder must show a reasonable effort to locate the true owner.
