Dr William W Bolton of Chicago cautions against indiscriminate use of sulfa or antibiotic medicines for colds sore throats or coughs saying such practice can hinder recovery and may lead to severe later infections including pneumonia influenza meningitis or staphylococcal illness. The sequoia tree is noted as the oldest living thing, with specimens aged around two thousand years.
Washington. National party chairmen claimed sweeping wins from Tuesday’s presidential primaries. Republicans praised Eisenhower’s strong showings in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania while Democrats cited overall gains and Kefauver’s weak showing in those states. The Cotton Belt bed from Sherman to Commerce aided the route, with underpass access planned near Whitewright.
The Blue Ridge Cemetery Association invites the public to attend a memorial and decoration service at Blue Ridge Cemetery at 2 p.m. on May 6. A business meeting will precede the service. Also guidance on keeping peeled sweet potatoes from browning by soaking in cold water.
Ross B. Alexander 25 died after contact with a high voltage line while atop a 35 foot pole employed by Dallas Power & Light Company. Funeral services were held at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Arthur Freeman and others officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Betty Jo Rich, a four month old son Bradley, his father O G Alexander and step mother, four brothers and a sister and half sister. He served 21 months in the Armed Forces including 12 months in Korea. He was a member of Hickory Tree Baptist Church.
Mrs. Louise Merritt aged 96 died April 18 at her Dallas home after a career as a piano teacher in Whitewright and other towns. She lived 12 years in Dallas and 18 years retired. Funeral conducted by Rev. Joe M. Russell. Survived by son R. E. Merritt of Napa California and two nieces.
L L Wendell invites readers to attend the Fifth Sunday Singing Convention in Ida at 2 p m Sunday. He notes previous turnouts have been good and predicts a well attended event with several local singers and two hours of singing.
Texas has an estimated 2,410,188 eligible voters, a record surpassing 1952. Comptroller Calvert based figures on county reports, noting 2,112,177 paid poll taxes and 298,011 exemption certificates. Precinct conventions set for May 5, with Harris County leading at 339,653 eligible voters.

The Spiritual Singers from Southwestern Christian College of Terrell will perform at the Church of Christ at 7 15 p m after the 6 p m revival service announced by Roy Waldrum minister. They are known for hymns and spirituals and have appeared before over a million people across the United States and Canada. They are also radio and TV performers and the public is invited.
The Fourth Quarterly Conference of the Whitewright Methodist Charge will convene April 26 at the First Methodist Church under Rev. Phillip W. Walker district superintendent. Reports cover the conference year starting June 1 1955 with pastors and members listed. sermon on April 29 titled Public Relations For the Church continues the series What Kind of a Church Do We Want Next Year concluding May 27.
The North Texas Larger Parish comprising Presbyterian Churches at Tom Bean Desert Dodd City and Ladonia will hold its spring festival on Sunday April 29 at Dodd City. The program runs 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A basket lunch is served at 12:30 with each family bringing own food and table service. Drinks provided by the host church.
Secretary Ezra Taft Benson says Eisenhower's veto of the omnibus farm bill boosts Republican prestige nationwide, especially in Midwestern farming states. Senator Frank Carlson cautions some GOP majorities may shrink. Benson hopes Congress supports a separate soil bank bill in the 1956 program.
Wisconsin Kefauver Club secretary Marie O Brandes said the group spent 41 dollars on the senator's primary in Wisconsin Kefauver won all 28 of the state's Democratic convention votes The Sun reported this expenditure and result from Madison Wisconsin.
Whitewright schools cap Western Week with a Friday night gymnasium event at 8 the variety show and crowning of the king and queen. Tickets sell at 25 cents for children and 35 cents for adults with sales at the door. Local and visiting entertainers appear against a western backdrop.
Texas gains 33,862 members to 560,350 for the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers. California leads with 1,529,856 members, followed by Ohio 657,829 and Illinois 618,422.
Boston company Universal Broadcast System proposes replacing the rear view mirror with a behind the car television feed. A small camera would sit in the trunk and transmit through closed circuit TV to a 4 by 6 inch screen on the dash. The system debuted for General Motors 1956 Motorama in Boston.
President Eisenhower's Commission on Veterans Benefits urged minimal pensions tied to social security payments. The 415 page Bradley report proposed replacing or reducing pensions for 22 million veterans with need and disability based grants. It suggests deducting social security from pensions and sets new monthly payments of 70 dollars for single veterans and 105 dollars for those with a dependent wife.
