Community pages celebrate local events and people. Rodeo winners receive congratulations while civic figures are named for honors. Vacation Bible School plans are announced for June at local churches and a correction note updates a baby shower hostess.
Whitewright students crowned Stampede Days royalty at Dawson Arena with winners across grades from first to freshmen. Rodeo champs include Night barrels Dottie Showers and Bull Riding Merl Little first place, Gary Daniel all around winner, and Roberta Lacy in ribbon roping. The parade float by the sophomore class won top honors.
J A May longtime pharmacist and community leader in Jacksonville died of a heart attack last Tuesday after surgery at a hospital. Services were held at Thompson Funeral Home with burial in Resthaven. He served as Lions Club president 1953 54 and held multiple civic roles including director of First National Bank of Jacksonville and trustee of the Travis Clinic Foundation. He was born September 9 1906 in Whitewright and survived by his wife, a daughter, two brothers, and two grandchildren.
Whitewright Rotarians visited the Bill Holloway Fertilizer Plant on the south side of town. They toured a 500000 gallon liquid nitrogen storage tank, unloading areas, the mixing plant, and soil testing laboratory, with offices in telephonic contact with truck fleets.
The Whitewright summer baseball program sets an organization meeting for Thursday in Fireman's Hall at 7 30 p m to register players aged 8 to 15 for Pee Wee Little Pony leagues with a 4 dollar insurance fee. An adult meeting follows and secretary Mrs Bob Purdom urges community leadership to support the program.
Mrs. Steve Sullivan was elected and installed president of the Grayson County Federation of Women's Clubs at the spring meeting held Thursday at Underwood's Cafeteria in Sherman. She is active as first vice president and past president of the Friday Literary Club and serves as PTO treasurer. Other new officers include Ruth Wiley and several Sherman area members.
Whitewright Tigers earned the runner-up team trophy at the regional meet in Stephenville as Mason won with 58 points, Whitewright 54, and Honey Grove 53. Ricky Newman placed fourth in shot put. Joe Ballard set a school record in long jump but did not place. the Tiger 440 relay team won with 4x4 44.4 seconds, qualifying for the state meet in Austin May 10.
