Farmers report a severe freeze Saturday night through Sunday that damaged fruit trees from buds to bloom and killed spring oats in many fields. Potatoes largely escaped, vegetables suffered some losses, and wheat remains in good condition. Greenbugs damaged wheat and oats in spots, with overall yield expectations lowered.
Brig. Gen. William Mitchell told the House post office committee that American aviation is hopeless compared with world standards because the air mail is controlled by the same group. He criticized the army mail plan as dangerous and urged aviation be placed under a single agency to prevent continued mismanagement and poor equipment.
Thirty five employees of the Texas Louisiana Power Company gathered in their office for a social and business meeting. The event featured displays of three Kelvinator refrigerator models and a factory demonstration. A short film showed refrigerator assembly and parts, with the Kelvinator line recently added to company offerings. A six o clock dinner followed in the church basement, served by the Ester Sunday school class, then another business session was held.
The Texas Odd Fellows and the Rebekah State Assembly ended a three day convention in Mineral Wells. The Grand Lodge approved a resolution to remit all unpaid dues owed by subordinate lodges up to January 1 1934 and authorize lodges to clear delinquent member dues. Also notices sale of typewriter supplies at Sun office.
R T Pennington president of the Whitewright Rotary Club was unanimously elected to represent at the Rotary International convention in Detroit in June. A committee named On to Sherman Committee will ensure full club representation at the district convention in Sherman in May with 100 percent attendance. The Detroit delegation includes F E Douglas Rev C W Dennis and C J Meador. Program chairman W E LaRoe introduced Rev G C Minor who spoke on international relations in a thoughtful address. Marvin Felker, a recent move from Whitesboro, attended as a guest.
In Grayson County 57 729 acres planted to cotton were removed under federal contracts reducing potential surplus. 3 345 signers hold 434 134 acres on their farms. 116 non signers remain. Estimated county cotton yield and payments total about 432 954 50 dollars.
The corn hog control campaign closed last Saturday with about 650 contracts in the county. The Whitewright committee signed 115 producers, about 18 percent. Some contracts may be rejected by the government due to discrepancies in production figures and facilities.
Van Zandt announces candidacy for State Senate to succeed Cecil Murphy of Gainesville after widespread Grayson County opposition to the incumbent. He notes prior service from 1926 and says he will seek the district’s vote soon. A stray kitchen tip about cleaning aluminum pans is included in the text.

Sherman assistant district attorney R C Slagle Jr was elected president of the Young Democrats at a Grayson County courthouse meeting. C W Woodall Tioga became vice president Raymond C Steed Sherman was secretary treasurer an executive committee from four precincts was chosen. The group will meet on the second Tuesday each month. Members must be 21 to 40 years old.
D A Ray general manager says the fourth Monday trades day will feature a bigger and better rodeo. Russell and Everheart rodeo company will bring new riders and bucking stock. Merchants advertise special prices in The Sun for trades day.
The Bethel community south of Whitewright gets a voting box after a petition signed by over 90 citizens. About 200 voters reside in the new precinct, largely drawn from Pilot Grove with some from Whitewright. The district includes Bethel school territory and extends to the Collin County line southward.
The Collinsville State Bank began operations Wednesday with W. J. Gardiner as cashier. Equipment was moved from Gordonville Tuesday afternoon after a charter amendment approved by Gordonville bank stockholders Monday.
Governor William H. Langer issued an immediate moratorium on business and corporation debts in North Dakota. The measure, announced in BisARck, takes effect at once and lasts until July 15.
The list details students named on the honor roll by grade from First to Seventh grade. Notable names include Hugh Tim Atterbury Barbara Lee Kight Jo Anna Harrison Ola Riddle Jo Howard Cook John Rufus Taylor Weldon Ingram Norma Jean Blanton and many others across six grades.
Roy Evans, living four miles east of town, reports a barn on the rented farm owned by a loan company burned Tuesday at noon. He lost a tractor, six pigs, and some feed. he had moved the tractor into the barn hallway before the fire. The origin is unknown and there was no insurance.
New York reports Eberhard Faber the pencil king says he has spent fifty five active years as a company officer. He notes he has weathered depressions of all kinds and believes the current downturn is near its end. His rule for longevity is do not worry.
C A Belote, Bells pioneer and Civil War veteran, is reported critically ill at his home east of Bells. All relatives have been summoned to his bedside.
E C Brand of the State Banking Commission issued a proclamation extending the moratorium for loan brokers to June 1. The measure has been renewed periodically over the past year, with the previous expiration set for April 1.
City trash wagons began rounds this week in a cleanup effort to remove unburnable rubbish. Mayor Echols urges residents to burn burnables and place unburnables in containers for loading. Overflow may be piled when containers fill. Some rubbish is placed in Oak Hill Cemetery ditch to stop a wash, to be covered with dirt later per the Cemetery Association.
Wm. C. Brannon and Marshall Padgitt, who bought the Palace theatre from Robb & Rawley, assume management and begin remodeling while keeping regular operations. They plan a grand opening after renovations by April 15. Both have moved families to Whitewright from Denton and McKinney.
J E Perie of Paris district highway engineer met with Judge J J Loy in Sherman to press for a contract to grade and drain the five mile Denison Bells highway 160 extension. Loy urged Austin to expedite the grant and questioned delays after a $90,000 transfer from extension 116 to highway 160. Money would cover most of the five mile section but weather and soil conditions threaten work without funds for paving and surfacing.
Many more women than men attend the Y M C A lectures in Dallas on how to remain happily married. The program focuses on marriage harmony and personal improvement.
Representative Patman of Texas today voiced opposition to a proposed bonus march on Washington. He supports cash payment of the bonus and notes a telegram from George Korgski of East Barre Vermont on behalf of 1000 veterans asking whether a march would help influence the Senate at this time.
