Mesquite Brush Control Boosts Cattle Weights and Weaning
A seven year Texas Agricultural Experiment Station study shows cows on mesquite controlled pastures stay in better shape and heavier calves at weaning. Researchers E D Robinson P T Marion and B T Cross, Spur, ran trials 1961 to 1968 on eight 20 acre pastures with four brush cleared and four untreated. Calf weights at weaning averaged 509 pounds on cleared pastures vs 473 on brushy land, with forage production and plant quality improved.
