Gary Petty, serviceman for the Community Public Service Co, has been promoted to commercial manager of the CPS office in Petrolia. He will serve petroleum buyers in the Petrolia area and reported to his post on Monday. Jackie Howell replaces Petty, bringing three years with the company as a lineman. Howell is a Whitewright native and Tren ton High School graduate.

Truck Hangs Driver Stuck Under Hwy 69 Underpass
A 1963 model truck driven by Earl Fuller became wedged under the Whitewright Highway 69 underpass due to excessive hay and low clearance. Patrolmen Roy Galyon and Tom Ballard responded to the incident Monday at 2 40 am.

Scramblers Bring Calves After Houston Shows
Jim Bryant and Darrell Dyer returned from the Houston Fat Stock Show with new calves. The Future Farmers of America members joined 22 others in the Houston Astrodome to chase twelve calves, each numbered for sponsor support. Sponsors Shell Chemical and Houston Natural Gas will assist as the boys report progress and plan future heifer calves for next year.

A 12 year old matriarch cow at C R Johnson ranch near White Wright produced twin calves born 1 day apart. The first calf died, a second calf was raised after adoption, and days later a healthy third youngster arrived. The cow and both calves were thriving as photographed by the Sun.

Sonny Smith files for reelection to Whitewright council
Whitewright city councilman Sonny Smith, in office since 1967, has filed to seek a second term. He is the second incumbent to file for reelection, joining J. B. Thornhill as the only two candidates to date for the three upcoming vacancies. The election is April 5. Smith works for Reece Electric in Bonham, is a Whitewright native, and holds a BS from Southwestern College at Durant Oklahoma. He is cubmaster of the local cub scouts and is married to Peggy with two sons Phillip and James.

Tom Bean High School Closes Amid Flu Epidemic
A worsening influenza outbreak cuts Tom Bean School attendance by over 27 percent and forces cancellation of classes for the rest of the week. Superintendent Tim Kelly reports 87 of 321 pupils missing at Thursday start and about 70 absent Wednesday, with measles concerns urged by county health officials.
