Mr and Mrs Roy Benson of Tom Bean celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary with an open house Sunday June 26 from 3 to 6 pm at their home. They were married at the bride's parents home by Rev A S Pinson. They moved from Bethel to Tom Bean in 1920 and to their present home in 1930.
Frank Whitworth announces that Rev. Elvis L Hill will preach his farewell sermon this Sunday at the Assembly of God Church. Hill has served as pastor for three years and the public is invited to attend.
The two week Vacation Church School sponsored by Methodist and Presbyterian churches opens Monday at 8:30 a m with classes for Nursery Kindergarten Primary Junior and Junior Hi at the two churches. Hours are 8:30 to 10:30 daily Monday through Friday except July 4 closing Friday July 8 with offerings to support the Childrens Homes.
New York wholesale food prices measured by Dun and Bradstreet eased slightly from the peak, down 11 percent from a year earlier. The index for a pound of 31 basic items stood at 6.49, up from 6.51 last week but below 7.28 a year ago. Higher readings came from corn, hams, coffee, eggs and hogs while flour, wheat, rye, oats, lard, sugar, tea, cocoa, steers and lambs fell.
A publication notes it sells registrar forms and warns readers after receiving a dubious New York ad offering large monthly gains for a fee. The editor rejects the sham offer and criticizes other publishers for promoting similar schemes, urging caution among readers.
Funeral services for 69 year old W L Hatfield will be held at 10 a m Friday at Barnheart chapel with Rev Lee H Smith and Rev J D Fleming officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Hatfield died Wednesday at 145 p m of a heart attack at his home. He was born August 31 1885 in Cookeville Tenn and came to Texas in 1908. He married Kathleen Badgett May 10 1922 and worked in building construction for 40 years. He taught GI carpentry school here for 22 years after World War II. He was a World War I veteran and member of American Legion VFW and Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife a daughter Sgt Billie Hatfield of the WAC Fort Benning Ga one brother J M Hatfield of Cookeville Tenn and one sister Mrs John Lawbaugh of Los Angeles Calif.
Funeral services were held in Sherman Tuesday for Paul G Hull 54 who died Saturday of a heart attack in an Oklahoma City coffee shop where he worked briefly as an electrical engineer Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery Sherman He was a Beloit Kansas native brother of Owen Hull Whitewright brother in law of Mrs Emmett Essen Sherman Surviving wife and his mother in Oklahoma City
Funeral services for Amy Jenkins 87 retired school teacher were held at 10 a m Saturday at Savoy Church of Christ conducted by minister Cole Tidwell. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery. She was born October 4 1867 southwest of Savoy and died at her birthplace. Survived by brothers John J. Jenkins of Bells and L W Jenkins of Savoy.
Jack A. Bartley and Travis Sanderson are among nine Grayson County boys selected for the Lone Star Farmer degree at the Future Farmers of America state convention in Houston in July 2023. Other honorees include Larry Vincent of Howe Harold Ponder of Sherman C B Isbell James Jenkins of Tom Bean Virgil Boaz J T Pamp len and Charles Winchester of Whitesboro.
VA chief says McKinney Hospital will close within a year with 450 patients moved to the new 784 bed Dallas Veterans Hospital. About 300 current Dallas patients will transfer in 60 days to a $10 million, 482 bed wing. The old McKinney building must be refurbished before moves.
The House ways and means committee voted 15 to 10 along party lines to pursue immediate revisions to Social Security. Welfare Secretary Hobby urged full public hearings, while Democrats push for quicker closed hearings and potential tax increases to fund enhanced benefits. GOP leaders cite a $2 billion annual cost and urge public hearings with President Eisenhower's support for hearings.
At a Wednesday night meeting of Everheart Thornhill American Legion Post Earl W. Fields was reelected post commander. New officers include Turner Skipworth first vice commander Bill Wolfe second vice commander Roy Blanton treasurer John Biggerstaff adjutant Edgar Ayers service officer J P Darwin historian B W Newman chaplain and O L Nicely sergeant at arms. Jackie Parnell reported on Boys State attendance sponsored by the post as preparations for the July 13 to 16 Legion Picnic were announced with Negro night slated for July 13.
J R Waldrum of the Church of Christ announces a revival from July 4 to 13 with daily services at 10 a m and 8 p m Evangelist Robert D Bankes of Kilgore a former Sherman minister led a successful local revival last year.
Texas DPS Director Homer Garrison Jr announces 100 vacancies in the Highway Patrol to be filled from qualified applicants. Requirements include ages 21 to 35, high school education, height 5 feet 8 inches, and weight between two and three and a half pounds per inch of height. Applications available at district offices or by writing W. J. Elliott in Austin.
Community Public Service Co announces an open house from 1 to 5 p m on Wednesday June 29 at the new CPS division offices on Highway 69 north. Clint Hennig heads Whitewright Division with 15 counties in North and East Texas. Other staff include Leon S White Owen Hull Joe Cook C C McLean Doris Hodder and Nancy Davis. The building is a 32 by 60 foot concrete block structure built by Mar Lang and Stanford of Sherman for Floyd Bassett who leased it to CPS. A 7 5 ton air conditioner will keep it comfortable.
College Station reports wheat farmers will vote on June 25 to decide quotas for the 1956 crop. If two thirds approve quotas, marketing quotas and penalties apply. price support remains at 76 percent parity or $1.81 per bushel. If less than one third support quotas, no quotas or penalties but support falls to 50 percent. Acreage allotments stay in effect regardless.

Joe Hart executive director of the Cotton Belt Association testifies before a House agriculture subcommittee alleging political bias in Texas cotton acreage allotments. He says new ASC committee appointees favored high plains western irrigated and Rio Grande Valley counties, with most committee members from those areas. Hart notes 7,500 members in 41 counties and cites talks with Texas GOP official Jack Porter before Washington. He also says he supported Eisenhower in 1952.
Godfrey Odom, who moved to a secluded Miami home, gave his wife a .22 rifle and told her to shoot on sight if she saw a prowler. He was wounded when he returned late and failed to respond to a call. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. The incident has become a cautionary tale.
