Overseas Casualties To Date Are 8 088

Washington, June 16 Seven hundred seventy casualties reported among the American expeditionary forces during the week ending today bring the total since American troops first landed in France nearly a year ago to 8 085. The War Department summary shows deaths from all causes 3 192 and 4 547 wounded in action with 346 missing.

Leviathan fends off eighteen U boats on war voyage home

The Leviathan troopship, formerly the Vaterland, fought off eighteen submarines during a round trip to France with 17 000 troops aboard. It sank five U boats, reached record speed, and returned safely despite heavy combat and torpedo fire. No American casualties were reported.

Divorces in County Court: 1916 Record Summary

Deputy District Clerk John L. Legate audited 1916 divorce records totaling 175 cases in the county. Of these 110 were filed by women and 65 by men. Cruel treatment led at least 110 suits, 35 were for abandonment, 20 for infidelity, with one long marriage case at 57 years and another at 42 years.

War Savings Day Proclamation in Whitewright 1918

Whitewright Mayor F M Echols proclaims June 28 1918 as National War Savings Day urging all adult wage earners and taxpayers in the city to attend a 2 PM meeting at local schoolhouses and pledge savings to be invested in War Savings Stamps in support of the national goal of 91000000. The proclamation notes attendance lists will be sent to state and national officials and calls every citizen to join and save.
