Preston EXVerheart Post American Legion met Tuesday night and agreed to hold the annual picnic July 8 to 11. A carnival company Ladeane Attractions is contracted, and committees were appointed to manage the event praised as one of Texas best picnics.
Congress passed a bill to provide monthly aid for dependents of low rank service members and an administration study may seek dropping the draft age to 18. The measure funds wives and children and sets deferment rules guiding future induction of married men.
Melbourne's Lord Mayor Fran cis J Beaurepaire proposes a midnight curfew for women to protect Allied soldiers from courting girls and vice versa. Critics argue it targets women, while police resources and social norms are cited as justifications.
Choice Moore state representative from Windom, Fannin County, left for San Antonio to enlist in the Army. He preferred the cavalry and this marks his second attempt after a prior failure due to his name being misspelled in records.
Billy Kincaid son of Mrs Lanius Kincaid and 1942 Whitewright High School graduate seeks the Lone Star Farmer degree the top state honor for vocational agriculture students. He has three years livestock and crop work and more than 250 dollars invested, plus active FFA work community service and leadership. His application passes district and area and goes before the State committee at New Braunfels this week after accompanying the V A teacher R B Cruse. Sonny Gosnell earned the degree in 1941 at Marshall and Jack Meador is the only other Whitewright student to do so.
The Office of Price Administration widened sugar stamps 5 and 6 to two pounds each while extending coverage to a monthly period. Stamp No 4, for one pound, expires June 27. Stamp 5 covers two pounds, usable until July 25, when Stamp 6 remains valid until August 22.
Commander James G. Stahlman told the Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce that war demands home front effort not only service, urging Jaycees to stop the notion of a short war and to back bonds. He praised Texas resolve and warned against pacifist surrender. He urged all to support total victory and active war participation.

Pvt Robert L Doss writes from Camp Wolters about age and family status of many reception center soldiers. Pvt John M Ashinhurst reports well from Fort Custer, now unknown station. James M Badgett promoted from first lieutenant to captain in Army Air Corps, stationed at Duncan Field TX.
Pink eye in cattle and coccidiosis in broilers have appeared recently. Vaccination helps reduce losses from pink eye and fowl cholera. Coccidiosis shows bloody droppings. buttermilk cures for several days and ongoing treatment preventions. Blue bugs in poultry houses require Carbo-Col to treat walls floors and roosts.
The Greek government estimates that conditions in occupied Greece are so dire that as many as 500 000 civilians could die of starvation this spring and summer.

German 95 of Whitewright will be at 3 30 p m Friday at the Church of Christ conducted by Allen Harper of Atoka Okla She was born Eliza Paxton in 1847 and moved from Kentucky to Missouri then Texas where she and James L German reared eleven children The family includes survivors in Dallas Coweta Tulsa Fort Worth Hollywood Albuquerque and Bonham with 23 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren
Arthur Dean aged 61 of Sherman was killed instantly Tuesday when he touched a 2300 volt power line while helping install an air conditioning unit on top of a building housing the defense section of the Denison district Army engineers. Police and firemen worked two hours without reviving him. He leaves a wife and two children in Sherman.
Allied forces led by the United States four motor Liberators and RAF torpedo planes with British ships sank one of Italy’s two heavy cruisers and damaged or destroyed multiple enemy ships in the central and eastern Mediterranean. The action left two Italian battleships battered and burning as Axis claims of losses were countered by official Allied communiques from Cairo and London.
The Admiralty Air Ministry communique said convoys delivered goods to Malta and Tobruk despite heavy attacks by superior enemy naval and air forces. It acknowledged British losses but refuted sensational enemy claims of sinking cruisers and damaging battleships and an aircraft carrier.

James V. Allred, candidate for the United States Senate, is scheduled to speak in Whitewright about 5 o clock Friday afternoon. He will speak in Greenville earlier in the afternoon and at Sherman Friday night, stopping here en route to Sherman.
W. C. Brown, president, announces that the County Line Singing Convention will suspend operations for an indefinite period due to tire shortages and other factors. The convention, active for over 20 years, has held meetings regularly since its organization and plans to resume at some future date.
