Bells county reports its school lunch canning program needs beans carrots cabbage beets and other vegetables after layoffs halted progress. Donors may call Mrs Floyd Everheart to arrange pickup. Canned foods will fund hot lunches for children next winter. Bells cannery targets 50 000 cans as part of county efforts.
Dallas Navy Recruiting Station announces lowered requirements affecting eyesight dental status and height. Reading distance varies by eye and two eyes at fifteen feet or six feet single eye. those with dental bridges may qualify. New height range expands from sixty four to seventy six inches. Color blind or full dental plate wearers may enlist in construction battalions.
German forces destroyed Lidice a Czech village near Prague killing all men and deporting women and children in retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. The move followed other executions and announced totals place Lidice among mass reprisals as Himmler vows revenge.
Hot Springs New Mexico cattle growers received no wartime exemption for cowhands. Adjt. Gen. R C Charlton, state Selective Service director, said the cattle industry must fill a growing labor gap by hiring exempt workers or those with dependents or over military age.
The University of Texas was established and opened its doors in Austin in 1883, marking a landmark in higher education for the region and the state. The campus began serving students, shaping academic and public life in Texas.

Sherman candidates enter official filings for district attorney and county posts as Judge R. M. Carter leads Grayson County Democratic efforts. Opponents include Ralph Elliott, J. H. Waggoner, J. S. Taylor, Charles C. Shannon, Lake Wilson, and B. W. Hampton as deadlines loom.
San Francisco worker Samuel W. Porteous, age 77, sent back his June old-age pension check for 32.50 to City Comptroller Harold J. Boyd. He continues full time work as a painter and paper hanger and says pension remittances may no longer be needed.
In Honolulu a Marine commander at Midway reports to Admiral Nimitz that the Japanese lost face while attempting to save pride, stating Japs lost pants in the retreat.
Whitewright received 4.67 inches of rain this June through Wednesday night, with 1.32 inches last Friday and 1.20 Friday night, 1.33 Monday night, and 0.82 Tuesday. This followed a May 22 dry spell, delaying field work and dampening crop prospects compared with last year’s early June rainfall.
Miss Eunice King county agent will teach a two day canning school at the Grammar School lunch room next Thursday and Friday from 2 30 to 5 30 p m. The program covers updated fruit and vegetable canning methods and sugar reduced recipes. A cottage cheese demonstration will also be given and the classes are open to the public.

Democratic leaders say opening the July 25 primary to military voters could let about 6000 soldiers sailors and marines cast absentee ballots. Absentee voting runs July 5 to July 22 with ballots requested or picked up in the county of residence and returned by the deadline. Soldiers and sailors must meet all voter qualifications including poll tax requirements.
Texas reports only 92 Confederate veterans pensioned last month along with 2 552 widows. Three veteran death pensions and twenty six widow pensions were issued. Payments varied from 12 50 to 50 dollars monthly with 17 married veterans at 50 dollars and 70 single veterans at 25 dollars. Nine veterans and 31 widows dropped from the rolls.
Postmaster Tom Lilley announced the new $5 automobile use stamps for vehicles after July 1. About 400 stamps arrived, with an expected sale near 600. stamps replace the $2.09 stickers and feature a red design with windshield adhesion and a serial number. The reverse records make, model, motor and license details. No card needed this time. possession may be required for gasoline rationing cards where fuel is rationed, though not in this region.
The House approved a pay bill projecting retroactive raises to June 1 for Army and Navy personnel. Rates include private at 50 dollars monthly rising to 114 for first sergeants and 126 to 138 for senior enlisted and officer ranks. Second lieutenants and ensigns climb from 1500 to 1800 dollars yearly with higher officer allowances.
Congress passes a bill aligning House and Senate pay provisions for Army and Navy dependents. Mandatory Class A rewards set a $22 pay deduction plus $28 for a wife and $12 per child. He warned that estimates on scrap rubber vary widely and said the campaign could be voluntary or compulsory if not fully successful. He urged motorists to extend tire life by reducing mileage and speed while noting the plan may affect civilian or military use of collected rubber. Senator Murray predicted about 20 million cars could stay in operation during the war.
