Whitewright Teams Set for Two Doubleheader Games

Whitewright Pony League and Pee Wee teams will host two doubleheaders next week. Monday features Pee Wee II vs Van Alstyne at 6:30 followed by Pony League against Van Alstyne. Thursday brings Pee Wees vs Howe and Pony League vs Leonard, all at 6:30 on the local field.

Miss Baker Named To Dean's List At ACU

Donna Baker of Whitewright was named to Abilene Christian University's dean's honor list for the 1977 spring semester among 904 students. She graduated Whitewright High in 1975 and earned a 3.93 GPA.

Sherman Democrat Sold to Donrey Media Group

The Sherman Democrat, a daily widely circulated in Whitewright area, announced its sale to Donrey Media Group. Frank W. Mayborn of Temple sold the paper, with E. L. Higgins remaining general manager and Dana A. Blocker continuing as managing editor. Mayborn retains stake in Temple Daily Telegram and KCEN-TV and will act as consultant.

Whitewright C of C hears SNAP aid talk and Yule decor plans

Whitewright Chamber of Commerce members met to approve a 10 pole Christmas decoration project for Downtown Whitewright at a cost of 118 dollars each and to set a plan for financing. The group also formed a Centennial committee to begin planning a 1978 observance of the town's 100th birthday.

United Way Approves 385000 Budget for 1978

The Grayson County United Way board approved a record high 385000 budget for 1978 at a June 9 meeting. The budget rises 13.23 percent from last year and 5 percent above 1977 pledges. Officers include Wayne Cabiness Denison president and Evelyn Blackmon executive vice president. Agencies supported include Public Library Summer Baseball Camp Fire Girls Boy Scouts and Salvation Army. The fund drive launches with a kickoff dinner at the Silver Wings Club in September and lasts six weeks with committee chairs to be announced in July.

New Library Hours Set for Whitewright Summer

Whitewright Public Library announces summer hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. five days weekly. Mrs. Kay Bryant, library board chair, says tours are in effect. Suzanne Cooper, home from college, is hired full time to greet patrons under a Texoma Regional Planning Commission youth employment grant.

Sunday Rain Helps Maize but Local Need More

In Whitewright area rainfall totaled almost an inch on Sunday afternoon but subsoil moisture remains critical. Farley Grain's Jack Farley and O K Feed Mill's Sonny Gosnell say maize benefited yet more rain is needed. Wheat harvest is about 98 percent complete with yields near or above expectations, averaging 33 to 35 bushels per acre, while prices hold around $1.80 per bushel. Farmers mostly sold new grain. few are building storage for wheat.

Leon Scott Promoted By Continental Telephone

Ann Logan, district service center manager at Continental Telephone Co., announced this week that Leon Scott has been promoted to service center supervisor in the Whitewright office. Scott replaces Mrs. Logan, who was promoted to her present capacity. He began with Continental Telephone Co. as an installer in 1973 and was promoted to facilities supervisor at Normangee in 1975. He will supervise dispatching of trouble reports and service orders. Scott is a 1963 graduate of Whitewright High School and a graduate of East Texas State University. He and his wife are both natives of Whitewright. He served on the Whitewright city council before being transferred to Normangee.

Whitewright Area Seeks Help For Hensley Children

Residents of Whitewright and nearby areas are urged to donate to a bank account at First National Bank of Whitewright for the three Hensley children Lori Ann 4 Jeffery Paul 3 and Melody Ann 1 who lost both parents in a May 6 Frisco auto crash. The Rev Johnnie Harris and wife will care for the siblings, with Jeffery needing medical bills covered. Funds will cover custody legal fees and future Social Security steps. Any amount is appreciated.
