Capps Resigns Whitewright to Lead Fort Worth District

Dick Capps, Whitewright schools superintendent for four years, resigns to become superintendent of the Northwest Independent School District near Fort Worth. The district serves six towns and about 232 square miles with enrollment expected to grow from 1,450 to 5,000. Capps, who recently earned a doctorate, cites opportunity as reason for leaving and will stay until a successor is hired, with resumes due July 6. The board also hired Claudia Holloway as elementary teacher.

School Budgets Await Legislature Action in Texas

Whitewright schools wait on state funding details as the legislature adjourned without a school financing bill. Gov Briscoe calls a special session starting July 11. Superintendent Dick Capps notes budgets will omit state funds until decisions are clear, and taxes will not rise.

Len Fennell Promoted To Dallas TI Plant

Len Fennell is promoted to a process engineer role and transferred from Sherman to the Dallas Texas Instruments plant. He will help develop and improve processes in the magnetic bubble memory group. The Fennells will move to Richardson after three years on Rosehill Road.

Fund For Children Nears $300 in Whitewright Hearts

Whitewright residents opened their hearts and pocketbooks this week for three orphaned children after a tragic car accident. The Sun highlighted their plight last week, and President Chuck led community relief efforts.

Whitewright Class of 47 Plans Reunion

The 1947 Whitewright high school graduates plan a 30 year reunion on July 2 at 7 p.m. in the grade school cafetorium. Special guests will be teachers from that year. All class members are invited. reservations may be made for dinner.

Distinguished Whitewright Students Earn TAMU Honor

Two Whitewright students Allan Harper and Debra Wortham earned the Distinguished Student ranking at Texas A&M University per registrar Robert Lacey. The honor, limited to about 10 percent of undergraduates, requires at least a 3.25 GPA and recognizes academic excellence among the 1947 class, with other local residents named in the roster.

Furr Starts Hiring Friday for Whitewright Civic Center

The Dallas firm Furr plans to move onto Whitewright site Friday and open an office to take job applications. Construction will begin soon, with most workers expected from the Whitewright community. The project, financed largely by an EDA grant of 493000 plus, will include city hall library fire and police stations an auditorium and other facilities.

Club Hears New Pastor In Whitewright Rotary

The Rev Don Weir new pastor of First United Methodist Church Whitewright spoke to the Rotary last Friday urging that worrying is needless and pointless. He noted many common worries and urged Rotarians to stop and trust. Rotarian Phillip Earnheart introduced the speaker and Weir urged them not to worry.

Grandchildren Gather at the Ryon Home

Mrs. Paul Ryon says they had great grandchildren visiting last week. Granddaughter and family Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Griffs and Andrea Ellen of Seabrook visited. Friday guests included another granddaughter Mrs. James Rogers with James Paul and Brett Allen from Greenville.
