Odds Against Dixie Rebellion in Democratic ranks grows

Washington Democratic leaders said a Dixie rebellion seems unlikely this year as a South survey shows party regularity in the region. A potential crash point would be a liberal or civil rights platform at the Chicago convention, though the party’s ability to form a third faction remains doubtful. South Carolina may bolt, possibly backing a favorite son if no candidate wins the electoral majority, a path once used in 1800 and 1824. Thurmond notes no current push for independent electors, but concedes a third option could arise. The Dixiecrats carried the Deep South in 1948 with South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
