Grayson College Ex-Students Association holds its twentieth annual reunion on the high school campus, Pilot Grove Baptist Church hosts annual homecoming, and Cannon nearby hosts a get-together for former residents. Grain harvest progresses with favorable yields predicted in Whitewright area, with per-acre wheat yields discussed.
Washington reports federal efforts to aid the nation’s 21 million people over 60 in housing. President Eisenhower backs a down payment loan plan, the Senate favors mortgage insurance and 75,000 public housing units for the elderly, while a House committee pursues a middle path.
Agriculture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson told farmers the new soil bank is aimed at reducing surpluses and conserving soil by paying farmers to idle cropland and apply conservation measures. He spoke at a Beaver Dam, Wisconsin meeting, stressing the program will deliver real surplus reduction or conservation value for every dollar spent. He dismissed the label of a drought relief and plow-up plan as largely untrue.
A two car crash five miles east of Denton killed Robbie Foster Marstrand seven of Fort Worth and Edna Turner Alderson forty five of Plano. Six others including the child’s parents, sister Candice five, grandparents Ben G. Simpson and wife, and Jerry Alderson forty eight were injured.
Tokyo reports American servicemen wed Japanese women at about 100 weekly, with over 25,000 such marriages since 1947 after a legal change. The rate rose in late 1955, recording 1837 marriages in the first six months and 2461 in the last six months of the year.
The Girl Scouts announced a historic membership of 2,642,616 for last year in their Congress report. The organization grows by more than 850 members daily, and about one in eight girls aged 7 to 17 is a Girl Scout.
Mrs Earl Blanton announces a beginner ceramics course at Whitewright school agriculture building starting June 11. Classes run 9 to 11 am Mondays and Fridays, taught by Mrs C J Meador and Mrs Riley Smith. The course is free to home making students and all adults. enrollment by calling Mrs Blanton.
J Walter Hammond president of the Texas Farm Bureau denounces proposed wage and hour act expansion into agriculture as ruinous. He cites Senate bills to lift large farm exemptions and raise minimum wage, with time and a half after 35 hours and overtime after eight hours per day. He warns costs to farmers would rise amid falling crop prices.

Earl McElrath was robbed at gunpoint of $7 and gloves by a hitchhiker as he exited the car in Asheville North Carolina. The assailant lectured him on not picking up hitchhikers again and the incident prompted a warning.
The First Baptist Church opens its annual Vacation Bible School Friday June eight at 1 30 p m preschool registration. A parade on Main street follows. Classes run Monday June eleven to Friday eleven from 8 30 to 11 00 each morning with singing worship Bible study and activities for nursery through intermediate ages.
Mrs. John H. Perry of Sherman dies of a heart attack at home. Funeral at First Methodist Sherman with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by son Dr. John H. Perry of Wichita Falls, three brothers, four sisters, and three grandchildren. Perry, born June 16, 1892, married in 1916 to John H. Perry of Drumwright Oklahoma.
Dr C J Simpson 86 father of Mrs Pascal Farley of Whitewright died Sunday in a Sherman hospital after a three week illness. He practiced medicine at Westminster from 1913 until retirement. Funeral at Westminster Methodist Church with multiple ministers. Burial in Leonard Cemetery. Survivors include four sons three daughters, two brothers, one sister, 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
Hubert P Blanton 69 died at his San Antonio home. Funeral and burial held there. Born near Whitewright son of Ben and (Mrs) Blanton he worked in the local post office as a young man. He was brother to Charley Layman and B F Blanton and uncle to Sheriff G W Blanton. Layman Frank Smith and Smith accompanied Blantons to the funeral.
Miss Beulah Holcomb of Greenville dies Wednesday in a Dallas hospital. Funeral services are at 2 p m today at First Baptist Church in Greenville with burial in City Cemetery in Whitewright likely around 4 p m. She was sister of the late Lee Holcomb of Whitewright.

In Charlotte on Hanson Dr a single back yard fence encloses the properties of seven neighbor families creating a private playground for 17 children. The block’s one street hosts 55 children among the households, making a communal space out of a shared boundary.
Stockholm reports Swedish liquor consumption rose by a third in six months after October’s lifting of the ban. Officials say Swedes average 5.5 quarts annually of 50 percent alcohol in liquids like whisky brandy and schnapps, surpassing the United States and avoiding comparison with Norway and Denmark.
The twentieth annual Grayson College Ex-Students Association reunion gathers Sunday at the high school campus starting with a cake contest and business session. A lunch follows then a country store auction and prize drawings. The scholarship winner will be chosen from six applicants, four girls and two boys, all descendants of Grayson College ex students and meeting high academic and activity criteria.
Pilot Grove Baptist Church plans a homecoming on Sunday June 10 inviting all members ex members and former pastors to attend. A roll call of all families occurs at 11 during the service. An ordination of deacons is set for 2 30 in the afternoon with pastors and ordained deacons invited to take part. Sunday school starts at 10 and morning worship at 11.
