The 36th anniversary recalls the 36 year old Whitewright blaze that destroyed much of the business district and twenty dwellings. Over 200000 in losses were paid by insurers as most buildings were rebuilt in brick within two years. Hot winds and dry weather also sparked farmer concerns about corn fields.
The Rev R L Gilpin is reassigned by the North Texas Methodist Conference to continue as pastor of the Whitewright Methodist Church for the coming year. He has led civic minded ministry and boys work, serving as scoutmaster and Rotary member, with church membership gains in the past eighteen months. Other Sherman district assignments announced in Dallas include district superintendent and several circuit pastors.
Washington The United States employment service reports 12 1/2 million veterans have jobs or are in school. Only 860,000 are unemployed as USES Director Robert C Goodwin notes rapid demobilization and employment rates surpass releases.
Whitewright reports no vacant business houses as several new and expanding ventures move in. Cull Reeves closes a 22 year old cleaning and pressing shop. G W Brown relocates a shoe repair shop. W D Taylor adds an ice cream parlor. Tanner Furniture opens with 469 visitors. Craig's Cafe installs air conditioning and a 45 cubic foot refrigerator. several fronts are repainted as commerce grows. Major improvements include C J Meador modernization, Bennett Beauty Shop expansion, and a new 12 by 28 foot tile wash house at Johnson Service Station. First Baptist Church begins a $25,000 addition as Whitewright plans for continued growth.
The Fannin County Electric Cooperative in Bonham received word from Washington that a $20,000 loan from the Rural Electrification Administration was approved. The funds will support a new service offering small loans to 2,632 subscribers for wiring homes, electric water pumps, and water system planning. J. S. Denton oversees the local Co-Op manager.
Washington reports a 1945 Agricultural Department forecast of smaller meat animal production for next year marking the lowest level since 1941. This year’s output remains sufficient for a per capita consumption of 150 to 155 pounds, the highest in over three decades, while civilian supplies stay above 1943 levels due to reduced exports.
A group of Ely citizens met with Fannin County Commissioners and secured immediate repair of the Ely Whitewright road. The WPA-era road suffers from potholes though it has a solid foundation and was black topped. Two carloads of material were needed, One car would be purchased by the county if the Ely community bought one. Material ordered and to be shipped to Whitewright, with work to start upon arrival. The effort honors Ely farming area and aims to designate the road Farm-to-Market and state control.
Denison ticket agent M B Morgan of the Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad was sworn in Tuesday as commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Austin. Gov Beauford H Jester called the appointment a double play benefiting Railway Brotherhoods and the AFL. Morgan, a practicing attorney, succeeds Mauren Moore whose term ended January 31.
Atlanta City Recorder Luke Arnold stated that 75 percent of the city's drunken driving is done by its best people. He claimed twice as many offenders could be caught if police watched social clubs late at night.
Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson ended sugar rationing for housewives and institutional users effective at midnight. Sugar remains rationed to bakers, soft drink and candy manufacturers and other industrial buyers, with price controls set through Oct. 31 unless shortened. The move follows added U.S. sugar allotments and new sources from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Java, easing wartime limits.
Brownwood motorcycle policeman Oscar Sanderson holds an unofficial local record by catching three bass without rod or net in Lake Brownwood. The largest weighed just under three pounds and all fish were weighed at the Brown County Sportsmen's Club Lake Brownwood contest station.
Meadville Pa a Civil War veteran Robert Rownd 102 stood erect to accept his bachelor of arts degree from Allegheny College eight decades after enlisting in 1867. The former national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic left after the ceremony saying he planned to tend his roses and work in his garden daily.
Preston Everheart Post American Legion plans a two night rodeo at American Legion Park on June 19 and 20 with broncos and Brahma cattle, calf roping, wild cow milking, and riders from Sherman Bonham and Oklahoma. A 7:30 parade will open each evening.
County Commissioner E P Jackson and road foreman Rich Lamb toured Whitewright on Wednesday reporting repairs to Bethel to Cannon blacktop roads. The Pilot Grove route and Whitewright to Tom Bean will receive the same treatment soon as stockpiled blacktop arrives, with cars of material being used. The roads were in fair condition apart from numerous holes motorists complained about and a rail car shortage hampered shipment of road covering.
County Agent Ben Cook says terracing work will begin after harvest. He will provide aid and information to landowners starting terraces and farmers who know the method can borrow farm levels from the county agent's office. All farm levels are out of the office and should be returned promptly.
New York report says total religious membership in the United States reached 73 673 182 at the start of 1947, up 1 930 040 from 1946. Forty seven Protestant churches totaled 43 635 058, seven non Protestant groups 30 038 124, Roman Catholic 24 402 124, and Jewish congregations 3 641 000. The largest Protestant denomination was the Methodists with 8 430 146 members, followed by the Southern Baptists at 6 079 305.
A former GI student at Texas A and M was confronted by 14 wives of nearby veterans. They waylaid him and beat him severely after reports of a troubled marriage and intoxicated behavior. Officials said the beating cured him.

Thursday features baby contests and a 40 member Tom Thumb wedding. Friday hosts the amateur show with three prize levels and a program starting at 8 oclock.
Whitewright reports onion harvest underway for a week to ten days with five railroad cars shipped and truck shipments surpassing rail. Prices offered: white onions 1.65 and yellow 1.50 per 50 pound sack. Some fields yield well, others blighted reducing tonnage. Wheat harvest near readiness with several loads sold around 2.00 per bushel. Oats expected near 0.75 per bushel. Cotton and corn advance despite high winds. dry weather allows work to continue. Farmers anticipate a needed rain for average corn yield.

AUSTIN reports the Fiftieth Legislature submitted nine constitutional amendments and passed 477 bills. Walter Long of the legislative service said final figures show 893 House bills introduced, 296 passed, with 289 sent to the Governor because seven lacked funding certs. Senators introduced 443 bills, 181 passed. nine constitutional changes split as seven from the House and two from the Senate, plus 50 House and 15 Senate joint resolutions.
The Gospel Five of Denison will perform a program at the Black person Baptist Church this Thursday night. A section of seats will be reserved for white people. A silver offering will be taken. The community notes the church's unusual habit of washing its food in water.
