J H Jim Waggoner declares his bid for Grayson County Commissioner Precinct No 2 after solicited by supporters. He frames the race as a needed change and pledges to discuss issues as the campaign advances. He thanks supporters and seeks active votes and personal meetings before election day.
Washington observes a swift chorus in the House as it passes three resolutions declaring war on Bulgaria Hungary and Romania without dissent. The move follows President Roosevelt's recommendation and marks the sixth time since December 7 that Congress votes for war. Members laughed through the roll calls as the satellite nations joined the Axis foes in the tally.
Sherman engineers revise the 3.71 mile North Travis street road from Sherman to Perrin Field. The $92 172 project cost will be trimmed and a Kreager farm right of way is being dropped. The plan to resurface with a 22 foot blacktop is replaced by an economy approach, with final figures pending design. City and precinct officials faced opposition and a court vote in April authorized possible condemnation for right of way.
Newly filed candidates for district and state offices disclosed after the filing deadline. Four seek the ninth state senate seat currently held by Olan R. Van Zandt with J P Buck Charles R Jones and William S Moore as challengers. Rayburn is opposed by Rev George T Balch for Congress. Capt J A Benton stands unopposed for Grayson Collin district floratorial seat. Deadline for single county district offices is June 13. Nominees for the forty fourth district include Bob Caraway LeRoy M Anderson Roger Q Evans. for place 2 include Jim Sparks M B Morgan and W J Minton.
Navy announces a nationwide observance naming Pearl Harbor Avengers to enlist thousands at mass ceremonies on June 7 1942. The Sherman Recruiting Station hosts a 1 PM program with oath in a reverent service and a parade featuring veterans parents spouses and youths ages 17 to 50. Applications are in person at Sherman station with selective service registrants eligible if ordered into the Army.
Arthur Badgett, chairman for the Whitewright area in the Agriculture Department drive, asks farmers to sell scrap iron steel rubber brass and copper now. Government needs scrap for war production. farmers should not donate but sell to dealers. Notify Badgett or the county AAA office to arrange pickup. Provide estimate of on hand.
In the first quarter, public safety reports show a sharp rise in traffic violations with speeding arrests largely among drivers on rationed tires. Governor Stevenson released the figures noting 98,978 warnings or arrests for driving irregularities versus 84,948 a year earlier, while Texas leads the nation in reduced traffic fatalities.
Whitewright Lodge No. 167 A F and A M will install elected officers on June 24 in joint ceremonies with Bells Savoy Trenton and Whitewright blue lodge chapter and council. District Deputy Grand Master Charles Daniel of Sherman will install blue lodge officers. Refreshments follow. Misses Sara Gillett and Phyllis Brown of Whitewright earned bachelor of science degrees at the thirty ninth annual commencement of Texas State College for Women in Denton. Gillett majored in business administration with economics and government minors and led the Professional Business Women's Club. Brown majored in home economics education with English minor and participated in various activities.
The Van Alstyne Leader suspended publication last week ending a half century of local service to South Grayson County. It was published by W. D. Benton and Conrad Schweighofer. Benton is related to the late R. S. Fulton who ran the paper since 1896 until his death last January. Schweighofer will keep the plant as a job shop. Van Alstyne has had a newspaper since the 1880s with J Perry Leslie founding the Van Alstyne Enterprise here.
An unnamed Pittsburg Gazette item tells how a finder returned a purse with 80 cents by adding 20 cents of his own money. He explained he knew how it felt to have less than a dollar and wanted the owner to have the full amount.
USDA entomologists offer chigger relief for picnickers by dusting fine sulphur on exposed skin and lawns. Apply one pound per 100 square feet or 50 pounds per acre, with up to three applications from May to August at two week intervals, plus an extra after heavy rain. The note adds a historical aside about Austin’s May 1888 dedication.
Sherman Selective Service Board sends 33 men to Dallas Army induction Friday June 12 including Robert Lawrence Doss and Clifton Thomas Hensley of Whitewright. Doss previously rejected for defective vision seeks reexamination. Other inductees listed with hometowns including Sherman Fort Worth Cleburne Van Alstyne Bells Tom Bean Howe and Corpus Christi transfer cases.
H. L. McLean of Sherman spoke at the Rotary Club luncheon describing Boy Scout war programs and waste paper drives. Emerson Sears received the Eagle Scout badge, note his long scouting tenure and recent plans to attend A and M College. The Sears are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sears, with guests Joe T. Wilkes and Dr. L. T. McCutcheon attending.
Dr F M Williams of Laredo to report for Navy duty at Corpus Christi Naval Air Base June 8 as lieutenant junior grade. Sgt Jones Alexander of Jefferson Barracks visiting relatives here this week. Pvt William H Cato of Sheppard Field spent the weekend with his uncle R E Binion. Cato’s father P A Cato of Wilson Texas. Older brother Homer Cato is in foreign service overseas. Sgt James B Phillips transferred from Lake Field Phoenix to Roswell New Mexico. his wife is a stenographer at the Air Base. Mr and Mrs Mark Montgomery report son Private Mark Montgomery Jr has returned from 15 days of maneuvers. assigned to the 47th Infantry 9th Division amphibian beachhead division at Fort Bragg NC.
Stockholm dispatch reports Marshal Semen Timoshenko the Russian commander in the Ukraine suffered minor wounds when a German dive bomber struck the automobile he rode in while inspecting the lines south of Kharkov during recent fighting. Texas A&M opened October 4 1876 under Governor Coke.
Washington reports two Japanese air raids on Dutch Harbor Alaska within six hours both attacks targeting the U S naval base. First raid at 6 a m caused fires and minor casualties while a brief 9 p m report confirmed a second raid with details unavailable.
A St. Paul man with substantial income from sources other than his salary has been classified 1-A in a presidential ruling. The registrant, over 30, married with two minor children, reported $6,000 annual income beyond his employment. The state appeal board had classified him 3-A due to dependents. The President’s ruling found the wife and children not dependent on his earnings and noted adequate family income from other sources.
Boyce of Fort Worth announced Sunday his filing for the Democratic Primary ballot in the Lieutenant Governor race. He is a former Fort Worth newspaperman who edited papers in Olney Brady Ranger Eastland and Cisco and has held radio and column duties. He served as goodwill ambassador of the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show and was Casa Manana publicity director.
