A Kansas wheat disaster attributed to an electrocuting wind devastates thousands of acres. Clyde M. Pyle reports a 10 day survey found wheat wilted, roots dead, soil dry after a May 13-15 cold dusty spell. Experts could not explain the phenomenon, with damage surpassing hot winds.
Clarence D. Chamberlin arrived in Berlin in the Bellanca monoplane Columbia completing a record flight from New York. After a perilous stop near a swampy area the craft landed at Cottbus then Berlin as Charles A. Levine joined in the cabin. A thrilling reception followed with twenty planes circling above as the crowd cheered.
Berlin reports Charles A. Lindbergh remains keeper of the record for piloting a plane from New York across the Atlantic. During the Bellanca Monoplane flight with Charles Levine aboard, Levine relieved the pilot at the controls on several occasions.
The body of Richard Lee aged man who fell dead while working in the field of J. H. Looney north of town Monday afternoon June 6th was buried at the City Cemetery Saturday morning at 10 oclock. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. H. Hawkins at the graveside. He had been here a few days and was described as gentle and well informed.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Elgie Fields on East Grand Avenue was damaged by a noon Saturday fire likely caused by defective wiring. Neighbors spotted the blaze as it burned along the roof. several hundred dollars in damage occurred before firefighters stopped it. Fields carried $1,000 insurance on the building and $1,000 on household goods.
Mr and Mrs Ira Fleming and Mr and Mrs Buell Spindle returning from Greenville saw their Ford sedan ignite on the highway south of Leonard. The fire spread quickly after gasoline pipes melted. the car burned as they escaped. Fleming carried fire insurance covering the loss.
The account describes wheat and hay crops turning brown and dead in large fields after an electrical event. Observations note moist ground where crops remained alive while adjacent sections died, with patterns of destruction including hour-glass and zigzag shapes across fields near Sitka and between Copeland and Montezuma.
A fine rain Sunday afternoon brought one half to three quarters of an inch across north, east, and west of Whitewright and three miles south, with Denison and Bells receiving over an inch. Showers fell at Van Alstyne and Howe. The rain aided corn and cotton, cool conditions followed, and most grain had been cut with threshing likely to begin next week though the grain crop remains light.
Charles A. Lindbergh receives the Langley medal from the Smithsonian for his nonstop New York to Paris flight. Missouri Governor Baker promotes him to colonel in the National Guard flying service. The Navy sends the airship Los Angeles to escort the Memphis to Washington. Lindbergh will be greeted by air mail pilots and will meet President Coolidge with a large Washington welcome and three addresses. A nationwide radio broadcast will cover the ceremonies.
Secretary Mellon announced the Treasury surplus for the current fiscal year would top 600 million dollars after receiving a credit of 27 million 677 thousand 604 dollars from the Boston and Maine Railroad. The payment, made during Government control, was processed through the Federal Reserve Bank at Boston and officials were not advised of the method. The funds will be added to the surplus and allow an upward revision of prior estimates.
A French speaker cautions that advances in chemical progress could enable the asphyxiation of whole cities in the next war. The warning highlights the potential scale and lethality of gas attacks and calls for urgent attention to chemical weapons dangers.
Full crews are at work digging ditches and laying gas lines in Whitewright with rapid progress over the past week. Gas lines have been laid on several streets and meters will be installed as the system nears completion. Local plumbers have piped several homes this week and many more will be ready to use gas once construction finishes.
Gov Dan Moody approved House bill No 122 requiring loan brokers to post a $1000 bond with the County Judge and file owner and agent names with the County Clerk. Penalty for violation is a $500 fine or one year in jail. He also approved House bill No 140 giving the Commissioners Court in counties without a school board authority to appoint a board until the next trustees election.
In Richmond Virginia Howard Brown eight years old died at Hygeia Hospital from blood poisoning after admission May 1 for acute appendicitis. He underwent immediate surgery but septicemia developed and despite ten days of efforts, death occurred. This marked the first fatality among Masonic Home patients despite many operations at the hospital.
Austin June 7 Gov Dan Moody announced no immediate special session after final passage of all state budget bills. He will travel Thursday to Atlantic City as a Ben Hur Temple delegate for the Imperial Shrine Council meeting June 14 to 16, then to Kansas City for an All-Texas tour across the Midwest and East, remaining away about three weeks.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin on Wednesday affirmed three life terms and a 45 year sentence. Among the cases was W. A. Martin convicted of murder in the slaying of Officer R. B. Parsons on August 6, 1925. Martin was tried in Dallas County. Parsons was a former Grayson County officer known in Whitewright.
Louisville Ky June 8 Fifty per cent of the estimated 42 billion dollars in retail sales during 1927 were credit sales. J R Hewitt of Baltimore Md vice president of the Retail Credit Men's National Association told the National Association of Credit Men assembled in their thirty second annual meeting here Tuesday.
Washington reports Judge Ben B. Lindsey lost his appeal after the U S Supreme Court denied review of the Colorado Supreme Court order removing him from Denver's Juvenile Court. The state court order stands final with no further appeal.

The Garland Rotary Club held its charter meeting Tuesday evening at the Garland Methodist Church basement. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Alexander Fred W. Smith Lloyd Moore and J. H. Waggoner. District Governor Stillwell of Texarkana delivered the charter. Ben Dyer of Whitewright, now manager of Dyer Bros drug store, is listed among members.
Fred Siebert, 33, confessed to attempting to blow up his wife by placing a dynamite charge in a hollowed firewood piece at her parents farm near Rockdale Madison Wisconsin. Mrs Siebert escaped death when the ax she used to split wood narrowly struck the dynamite. The incident prompted sheriff inquiry and Siebert’s imprisonment.
B. B. Adams led the program at the Rotary Club luncheon last Friday. Rev. J. H. Hawkins spoke on Service, followed by President W. E. LaRoe reading a communication from the district governor at Ostend Belgium. The club voted to host the Grayson County Rural Letter Carrier’s Association meeting at Whitewright soon. Fred W. Smith will chair the program committee Friday.
Miss Mary Rena Penn who led the art department at Columbia Institute in Columbia Tennessee spent the weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs Emmet Penn She left this week for Kingsville where she will teach this summer at the State Teachers College.

Six to seven and a half inch rises flood bottom lands and threaten crops and permanent resettlement. Red Cross plans to feed 150 Missouri families as Hoover joins relief talks in Monroe.
Sherman reports a man recruiting more than a hundred women Monday for a house to house baking powder demonstration at Hotel Grayson. After lunch on Mulberry Lawn and arranging taxi rides to the courthouse plaza, he vanished. Hotel Grayson management says the stranger claimed to represent a company, which denied any connection. Police suspect the man was of unsound mind, noting he posed as a railroad official in other cities.
