Ramblin with Darla invites readers to attend a Friday 7 p.m. music revue at Trenton High School auditorium featuring talented youths and adults. The column mixes light humor about do it yourself husbands, a new bridegroom’s toast, and notes on recent family trips, weather, and local school health physicals led by Coach Parker.
Mayor Walker reports last week’s daily water use fell after residential restrictions. Residents east of Bond Street may water only on Monday Wednesday and Friday, while those west of Bond Street may water on Tuesday Thursday and Saturday. No lawn watering on Sunday.
The first SNAP meal will be served Thursday at the 200 club in downtown Whitewright. Serving starts at noon and seniors 60 plus are invited. Meals are served Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call 364-2707 for delivery if unable to attend. A $1 fee applies for those who can afford it, donations accepted, and no one is turned away for inability to pay.
Whitewright Sun celebrates long time reader Taylor B Autrey who renews for 70th consecutive year. The Bethel area pioneer, born 1888 three miles south of Whitewright, recalls family roots, ties to Gene Autry, and a life of farming, church service, and community devotion despite losing wife Ella in 1974.
Dr. and Mrs. Steve Sullivan Kelley and Matt attended Liberal High School class of twenty years reunion last weekend in Liberal Kansas. About 120 graduates. roughly 60 attended. Sullivan served as class president. The event included a reception dinner dance and a family picnic. They stayed with his sister and brother in law Mr and Mrs Frederick Warner.
Area mile good producers began harvesting a crop ranked about average with prices down from last year. Farley Grain and O.K. Feed Mill offered up to 3 dollars per cwt, vs 3.85 to 4 dollars previously. Moisture shortages limited potential for an exceptionally good yield despite recent rains aiding gardens and other crops. Harvesting was in full swing with market grain quality described as good.
Whitewright residents note a 34 percent rise in 1977 sales tax collections, outpacing regional totals and signaling stronger retail activity. State comptroller figures show $10,929 local share, with city receipts at 1 cent from each 5 cent tax and the state receiving 4 cents. J O Wallace recently returned from Wilson N Jones hospital.
Dr. Wester to Whitewright Rotarians described GCC efforts to serve Grayson County with a broad curriculum and new clock hour courses in cosmetology welding radio repair and office occupations. He noted a popular piano tuning course two instructors and 27 students with a waiting list. The college plans tool and die training a real estate program and legal assistance course while expanding agriculture and the Munson Foundation grape vineyards. The Senior Citizen program has enrolled over 500 older learners. Financial aid is available to qualified students.
The Harris family, guardians of three Hensley children after their parents died in a May wreck, receive community support including two bushels of grapes and over 34 quarts of grape jelly. Nearly $900 is in a First National Bank account, with the first $350 going to Mrs Harris’s legal guardianship. The family also stocked a pantry with apples peaches and juice while the older children help with beds and chores. A $25 church offering was also donated.
