The 1977 Whitewright high school annuals go on sale Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the high school lobby with deposits adding $4 due. If unavailable, pickup is at Mrs. Betty Bodine’s office during posted hours. The page also notes community items and local notices.
Whitewright's Centennial Steering committee led by Emory Christian maps a July week long 100th birthday celebration aimed at thousands. Entertainment chief Edith Jester outlined plans including a Nashville country band and a major Oak Hill and City cemeteries beautification project with fencing, grave marker alignment, road work, water lines, grave indexing and fundraising letters to families for support.
The first Senior Nutrition Program SNAP meal served to 125 people at the 200 club with Sue Kelly and Louise Sawyer among officials present. The noon meal drew Methodist Men sponsors and included Darla Howell as a guest. The program seeks volunteers for home repairs and a telephone assurance operator, with meals planned every Tuesday and Thursday for seniors over 60 at a $1 charge. Nearby cemeteries Oak Hill and others receive fundraising for improvements, supported by a $46,592 federal grant for labor.
Whitewright public schools set to open Monday Aug 22 under new superintendent Larry Threadgill and new head football coach Charles Parker. The term runs 180 days with three quarters starting Aug 22, Nov 8, and Feb 21. Holidays include Labor Day Sept 5 and Thanksgiving Nov 24 25, with Christmas break Dec 16 to Mar 24. Graduation events are scheduled for May 25 junior high and May 28 high school.
Whitewright Rotary will view a film Friday at noon detailing Texas celebrations festivals rodeos and other colorful events. Stan Dicken Paris district public affairs officer for the department of highways and transportation arranged the screening with district highway officials as guests. The program also notes a prior film on early underground telephone cable lay presented by Dick Howell district engineer for Continental Telephone. Mrs. James Kay England recently visited the East Texas State University campus.
The city council approved $47,000 in federal grant funds for the city hall complex payments at a Tuesday night meeting. Discussion centered on outsourcing trash collection to a private contractor as Mayor Dick Walker cited high costs and labor shortages. No action was taken on the outsourcing proposal. bills were paid.
Rain eased drought across Whitewright area boosting pastures and gardens but arriving too late to aid the mile crop. farmers report a 25 percent harvest with prices around 2.90 per 100, while Bonham logged almost 3 inches from the same front that cooled temperatures briefly before a return to heat.
