Rural district students without a high school may transfer to Whitewright Independent School District or any district with a high school. The State will pay tuition if the resident district cannot, provided the transfer is completed by August 1, with July 30 as the deadline. If not transferred, tuition is the student’s responsibility for the year.
Washington reports 28,851 young men have received or are receiving training in citizens' military training camps this summer. About 45,000 candidates have been accepted with the remainder to begin training next month.
Indianapolis July 27 Mrs Oliver Williams 77 offered advice on marriage for her sixtieth anniversary urging husbands deserve evenings off while wives should also enjoy time alone. The remarks reflect mutual balance in long marriages as the couple marked the milestone.
Miss Edna Womack hosted a West Grand Avenue bridge luncheon on a sunny Wednesday for Sarah Richardson and Alberta Fitzpatrick of Sherman. Marian Barbee won high score at the tables. Guests included Minnie Willis, Marion Barbee, Margaret McMurry, Bessie Jo Barbee, Helen Thomas and Ruth Montgomery.
Austin reports the U S Department of Agriculture bureau of good roads sent Texas 10 checks totaling 70 000 dollars, increasing July federal highway aid to about 300 000 dollars. Through July the state has received over 2 million in federal aid since January.
Ruth Hogan a 15 year old junior high student shot her stepfather W H Mason 40 four times this morning in Fort Worth after claiming he attacked her mother Beulah Mason 38. Mason died en route to a hospital. Ruth told police she feared he would kill her mother with a knife and she acted with an uncle's pistol.
In Buenos Aires a single American conducted a patriotic ceremony beside a bomb-damaged George Washington statue in Palermo Gardens. He laid a floral tribute with U S and Argentine colors, sang The Star Spangled Banner, then departed in a car as spectators watched.
The University of Texas purchased 250000 in Treasury notes boosting its permanent fund to 6546450 dollars. The fund yields about 3.60 percent with potential rise to 3.65 percent. With two months remitted, investments near 7 million and annual yield around 254000 dollars to support new campus buildings. Royalties from oil companies in June totaled 217669 dollars with more expected.
The Missionary Society of the Methodist Church entertained on the church lawn Tuesday evening from 7 30 to 9. Guests were church and Sunday school members. Games followed by a plate lunch ice cream cake and lemonade were served. It was one of the most enjoyable gatherings in some time.
Constable Bennett locates a Ford found on the county line road south of town. The vehicle stayed roadside from Monday night to Wednesday before a party informed him and the car was turned over to Bennett. It bears a Gray son County number and was registered by a Denison party whose identity is not yet found.
John W. Pennell, age 80, died at his Tom Bean home Saturday at 9 50 am. Funeral services were held at the Tom Bean Baptist Church Sunday at 2 pm, led by Rev. J F Fender and Rev. I E Teague. Interment followed at Wittitoe Cemetery. He moved to Tom Bean 53 years ago after running a store at Orangeville. He was an original stockholder and director of the First National Bank of Whitewright and left substantial wealth. Survived by his wife and children Mrs J D Wheeler of Henrietta Oklahoma Ed and Ollie Pennell of Kirbyville and John and Arthur Pennell of Tom Bean. Five grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren also survive.
In Santiago Cuba Juan B Vinagre, a legless beggar with one arm, swam a mile through shark infested waters to raise money for his sick daughter. Spectators jeered at first but cheered as he neared the shore, and locals raised several hundred dollars for the family though the daughter's recovery was unlikely.
John Boswell of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce says a paved highway from Red River to Galveston on Federal Highway No. 75 is planned within 18 months. The route passes Denison Sherman McKinney Dallas Ennis Corsicana Fairfield Centerville Madisonville Huntsville Conroe and Houston. Fifty percent of the road is paved with funds to finish the rest except 40 miles. bond elections to close the gap may be called within 90 days. Federal Highway No. 75 runs Winnipeg to Galveston via Sioux City Omaha Topeka Tulsa Dallas and Houston.
At the weekly Rotary Club meeting visitors Jack Little of Dallas and Rev Purvis of Central Christian Church were introduced. Rev Purvis praised Rotary International and the clubs work for the community while expressing admiration for Whitewright and its people. He has four decades in ministry and, after living in many towns, favors Whitewright above all others.
El Paso reports Private Robert E. Griffin of the Seventh Cavalry was killed when a low flying plane struck him as he rode a horse in the maneu vers near Fort Bliss. Cadet E P Rose said he was flying low in bumpy air and did not realize he had struck the man.
Austin July 26 F M Snow an Erath County farmer lost his appeal to Governor Moody for commutation of his death sentence The report by the Board of Pardon Advisers stated Snow had sufficient mentality to know right from wrong He was convict ed of killing his stepson Bernie Connally whose head was found severed in a sack on Dec 9 1925 Snow also faced charges for killing his wife and her mother Their bodies were burned Snows execution was set for July 15 and a reprieve until Aug 12 was granted Moody also refused clemency for Rev A A Davis of Georgetown who got two years for perjury The case grew out of Williamson County grand jury findings about the flogging of R W Burles on Easter Sunday 1923 Moody earlier prominent as district attorney declined furlough for ill health Davis received no clemency A full pardon was sought from Acting Governor Barry Miller who denied it
The Fifth Sunday Singing Convention will be held at Tom Bean on July 30 and 31. Everyone is invited to attend and participate as a strong program is planned by secretary J. F. Spindle.
Texas voters will on August 1 decide four of eight proposed Fortieth Legislature amendments. Ballots allow separate approval or disapproval of each item with elections rules in effect. The four measures cover judicial system expansion, new tax structures, shifting district attorney and official compensation, and governor salary increases with broader officer pay rules.
Ike Exstein and Brother, Sherman’s oldest retailer since 1883, sold last week to a chain operator. Jake Exstein recently died. three employees held service records of 24, 27, and 35 years.
Texas railroads earned a net income of 11,828,645 for the five months ending May 31, 1927, after gross revenue of 102,547,533 and expenses surpassing 80,000,000 plus taxes near 4,000,000 and rentals over 6,000,000. Freight revenue surged to 81,525,645 while passenger income dipped by 53,314 from the prior year.
Austin July 26 The report of Insurance Commissioner R L Daniel shows 115 legal reserve life companies operating in Texas in 1926 with net premium income of 51 867 922 on 1 979 311 100 in force. Texas firms assets rose to 105 970 451 and insurance in force to 820 362 870 up 91 133 097 from 1925. Foreign underwriters also increased.
The Williams Filling Station was destroyed by fire Monday night at about 10 o'clock. The building and its contents were insured for 600 dollars. Owner Floyd Williams was at home when the fire was found, and the origin remains unknown. A previous burglary occurred a week earlier with several items stolen.
The T E L Class of the First Baptist Church held a Thursday annex meeting with Gladys Magar leading the business session and Carrie Hamilton presenting devotionals.Mrs. S S Montgomery organized a well received social hour with an engaging program. Hostesses J B Dickson Charles Wilson and Gladys Magar provided refreshments for thirty guests including out of town visitors Maple Wilson Walter Tyler Bryant Brown of Lubbock and Mrs Holmes Connelly and daughter of Trenton.
In Bonham a Tuesday court fined two country boys for a drunken Sunday night celebration at a vacant farm house on R. C. Montgomery's property east of town. They promised to replace broken window panes from their wild west exhibition as required by Constable George Bennett. The item ends noting Pierce's Cafe offers the best cooking food and service.
A severe wind rain and hail storm Friday afternoon caused estimated losses over $6,000 in Whitewright and nearby areas Nine locations reported broken plate glass at businesses including Simmons Barber Shop R L Johnson store and Huffines Garage Homes and outbuildings sustained water and roof damage A barn and granary burned after lightning struck Mrs Cora Simmons farm Two mules were killed in a nearby incident and about 25 insurance claims were expected Local residents described the event as one of the worst storms in years with many seeking shelter in cellars.
Chelsea Meredith Sims aged 20, son of Mr and Mrs J Frank Sims of Sherman and former Whitewright resident, died at his parents home Monday at 6 30 pm. Funeral was at John C Daniel Funeral Home in Sherman Tuesday at 5 pm led by Dr T L Holcomb of First Baptist. Survived by his parents and three brothers John M Earl and J Frank Sims.
Claire Hays a 76 year old Black man died Sunday afternoon at his brother's Bonham house where he had been staying for weeks. He moved from Bonham to Whitewright around 1887 and worked at the cotton yard earning a reputation for handling more bales in a day than any other yard worker. He was known as a hard worker and had many friends among white residents.
Electra July 26 Fire of undetermined origin destroyed two barns of the W T Waggoner Racing Association killing six horses and causing about 300000 in losses. Notable victims include Aqua Viva imported from France valued at 65000 Gentility and Wiser at 50000 each Iris Bird Miss Lang and Orblication at 30000 each. Colts of the mares and one unnamed yearling were also lost. Horses were partially insured.
