Joe Tate, Whitewright’s representative in the Dallas baseball club, has raised his batting average from 268 on July 4 to 316 after a recent hot stretch. In a game against Beaumont last Thursday, Tate hit two home runs in his first two at bats.
Sherman Aug. 2. Dry warm weather in August is needed to curb boll weevil and boll worm damage across Grayson County. County farm agent C. C. Morris reports heavy infestation from recent rains and warns that continued cloudy or wet weather could worsen losses. The boll worm invades bolls, with eggs hatching into larvae that destroy fruit. heavy rains do not stop the pest.
Austin August 8 Seventeen million acres of 69 percent cotton in Texas will yield about 4 600 000 bales or 1 006 000 less than last year. Commissioner George B Terrell estimated based on July 25 crop reports. He noted potential 20 cent per pound prices if the crop does not improve. Wheat and oats are very short. corn sorghum peanuts sweet potatoes and hay are generally good. Texas can feed itself next year.
Angora Turkey August 3 Pigs long considered unclean by Islam may be promoted to the Mohammedan bill of fare as Kemal Pasha with liberal views influences change. The change could come before many years pass as religious traditions fade.
Mrs. Jack McMillin and her daughter from Dallas spent the first of the week as guests of Mr. and Mrs. D S McMillin. They were en route home from a visit at Sulphur Oklahoma.
Denison and Sherman were officially married Monday night before thousands as a seven mile parade marked Grayson County bond election victory. Bands, banners, and a wheelbarrow wager highlighted the celebration with leaders from both cities pledging continued regional cooperation.
Grayson County commissioners accepted bids July 27 28 for road building machinery. Five tractors were bought from R B George Machinery Dallas Texas and six graders from J D Adams Lone Star Road Austin Western Dallas. Delivery occurred this week and will aid in rebuilding and constructing gravel roads. An engineer to represent the county will be chosen later by the court.
Mr and Mrs J D Hoard and daughter Mrs J E Payne Jr and child Jayne visited Sherman for a medical procedure as Jayne had her tonsils and adenoids removed.
The annual Baptist revival will start August 28 with Rev. B. B. Crimm preaching. He leads a three member Crimm party including a choir director and pianist. The church plans an outdoor tabernacle to accommodate large crowds and invites other city churches to participate.
Will C. Edwards editor of the Denton Record Chronicle departs Denton for Washington D C to assume publisher duties at the Washington Herald beginning Aug 1. A longtime Texas newspaper figure he built the Denton paper from weekly to strong small city daily and helped found and lead state press groups. He also led Rotary work and served in the Thirty eighth Texas Legislature.
An 11-year-old boy, William Talerico Jr., nearly had both arms severed when a freight train passed over them as he and friends walked toward a swimming pool. The conductor stopped the train, and the boy was conscious on the way to hospital, fearing his father would ban swimming.
W Boyd Gatewood resigns as private secretary to Gov Moody and moves to Houston to join the Post Dispatch. No successor named. Gatewood, a noted newspaper writer who covered Moody's campaign, drew Dan Moody's offer to serve as private secretary upon becoming governor.
Mrs. Guy Dillon and her children returned to their Hillsboro home Friday after visiting Rev. and Mrs. W. A. Kirkpatrick. They were accompanied home by Robert W. Grant of Kansas City and Miss Velma Kirkpatrick.
J M Wright and Bryant King were elected members of the board of directors of the First National Bank Tuesday. Wright, of Bow Wright Drug Company, and King, a prominent farmer from the Canaan area, fill vacancies left by the deaths of S E Jones and J W Pennell. The board also lists C B Bryant W H King F E Douglas T E Sears Emmet Penn R H May R A Gillett Kay Kimball Howard Brodhead.
New Orleans report shows world consumption of American cotton ending July at 17.43 million bales, the highest on record. Southern consumption reached 5.47 million bales, up 692,465 from last year, while exports stood at 11.25 million and mills absorbed about 8.25 million.
In Whitewright the four proposed constitutional amendments were rejected by about four to one. Of 123 votes cast, Judiciary 27 for 93 against, Taxation 20 for 101 against, Fee abolition 21 for 98 against, Governor’s salary 1 for 105 against. Statewide, the amendments also failed by roughly four to one.
Nashville Tenn August 3 Roland Wolfe two years old escaped death Monday when he fell from a seventh floor window of the Hermitage Hotel landing on the shoulders of Raymond Garnetts of New York. The boy suffered a broken arm and leg Garnetts was cut across the forehead.
Rapid City, Aug 3 President Coolidge hears from Sen Arthur Capper that farmers still want the McNary-Haugen relief bill with the equalization fee. Capper says supporters will push essential provisions next winter in Congress, likely the fourth session of the struggle.
Gov. Dan Moody issued a post election statement noting public lethargy helped defeat the tax and judiciary amendments. He warned the road to justice remains long and expensive and questioned a fall special session, suggesting it may come later in winter.

State Highway Department figures show Texas registrations to date through August 1 1927 with 905 382 passenger cars 101 424 trucks 2 254 buses 2 511 motorcycles 2 866 dealers 8 273 chauffeurs 198 042 transfers 22 396 duplicate plates and 439 visitors licenses.
Little Miss Elizabeth Davidson has come back from a visit with relatives in Durant Oklahoma.
Farmers in Whitewright expect the first 1927 cotton bale by August with early bolls opening in fields. Last year the first bale arrived September 1 sold to White & Donigan at 20 cents. In 1925 the first bale was August 5, grown by John Booker, fetching 27.5 cents. Boll worms cause some damage but growers forecast a good crop if August weather stays favorable.
Mrs. Floyd Harris of the Kentuckytown Self Help Club won first in butter judging at the July Grayson County Council meeting. She placed sixth at the state contest during the Farmers' Short Course at A. and M. College last week. Miss Inez Derryberry county agent, C. C. Morris county farm agent, and 34 delegates from women and girls clubs and boys clubs attended. Bethel and Pilot Grove clubs also had delegates.
Temple men Billy Bryant and Hugh McCann drove to a local hospital together after a Friday night knife attack. Bryant lost an eye after surgery while McCann suffered deep arm wounds. Investigators have no witnesses and a charge of aggravated assault awaits grand jury action.
F C Bishopp in Dallas, head of the U S Bureau of Entomology, advises targeting bollworm moths as they migrate from corn to cotton. He recommends calcium arsenate dust at five to six pounds per acre, with a second application in eight days, focusing on the period after hatching when worms feed on plant surfaces.
