Justin Wilson a Cajun humorist and radio commentator will keynote a July 15 banquet at Sherman Municipal Ballroom to launch a $4,000,000 expansion for the Wilson N. Jones Memorial Hospital. Ellis Olmstead leads the campaign with invited guests. program includes officials and health leaders outlining needs and costs.
A reader poem recalls a boy at bat with bases loaded and the crowd jeering. It urges empathy and restraint, reminding that a child faces pressure and should be protected from cruel taunts.
Whitewright marked its second annual Fourth of July with a large parade down Grand Street and a daylong park gathering. Top float honors went to Symbols of America by Town and Country Club. other entries featured Buggy for Freedom and a variety of youth groups and school sweethearts. The event also showcased a Friday Literary Club arts show and local contests.
Rep Bill Sullivant of Gainesville is named among seven House members chosen by Speaker Bill Clayton to study the proposed new state constitution. The 20-member special joint interim committee will report on implementation to the 1976 Legislature session. Voters will decide November 4 whether to approve articles of the constitution. Peggy Partridge, longtime First National Bank executive, was honored July 1 for 17 years of service, becoming the bank’s first woman vice president. James Medford, Cedar Hill evangelist, will lead a gospel meeting in Whitewright July 14–20 with Eugene Pearson as song leader. World War I veteran Joan Curtis checked a Sun for American Legion Park activities.
USDA announced extended use of old 50 cent, 2 dollar, and 5 dollar food stamps until August 31 to allow issuers from March to May time to spend them. New series 1, 5, 10 dollar stamps issued March 1 with June 30 deadline for old coupons. Grocers can redeem old coupons through banks by September 30. PFC William Jester, honored graduate from Ft Gordon training, promoted to E-3 and heading to Korea for a 13 month tour. wife Randa to stay with her parents in Bonham.
Whitewright Lions Club held installation Monday at Fireman's Hall for the new year. Former District Governor Earl Duckworth officiated with attendance by local Lions and ladies and District Gov Milton Schwartz. New officers: President Charles Sessom. 1st VP Dick Capps. 2nd VP Charles Truska. 3rd VP Narvin Alexander. Sec-Treas Mike Spann. Lion Tanner Joe Maglio. Tail Twister Bill Dyer. 2-year directors Bud Roach and Joe Norwood. Also San Bernardino note: Tech Sergeant Elmer R. Ballard, son of Mrs Annie M. Ballard of Whitewright, has graduated from the MAC NCO Academy at Norton AFB Calif. Ballard, an air passenger technician at McGuire AFB, is a 1962 graduate of Fred Douglas High School, Sherman, Tex.
