On July 4 the Class of 1950 expressed deep thanks for warm hospitality during their 25th reunion. They felt welcomed and said they still belong, calling it a return home. An item notes a burpless cucumber found by Mrs. R. J. Warren in the garden at 411 South Savage.
The first Red River Valley Tractor Pullers Association meet was held in Durant Oklahoma over Friday and Saturday with four Whitewright entrants planning future events in Gainesville on August 22 and 23 and in Greenville on August 29 and 30 Gene Shaw won a trophy and prize money in a Super M Diesel Jimmy Wilkinson drove a 1256 International Diesel to a Friday trophy and a Saturday stock class final pulloff Ronald Turner competed in a 806 International Diesel in the 15000 pound stock class Jackie Jester pulled in the 9000 pound stock class weighing 7000 pounds and delivering strong performances.
A revival meeting at Marvin United Methodist Church in the Ely community begins next Sunday and continues through July 25. Services run nightly at 8 o'clock, with Rev. Bob Bryan of Whitewright delivering the messages. The public is invited to attend.
The Rev. Dan Vestal of Fort Worth will evangelize at Hebron Baptist Church two miles north of Bells from Sunday July 20 through July 27 with nightly 7 30 pm services. Tommy Perkins of Greenville will lead singing. Vestal, a 30 year veteran and Baylor Southwestern Seminary graduate, has preached 1000 plus revivals in over 40 states and previously led LeVage Baptist near Waco. He spoke at the Blue Ridge Crusade June 22 29 involving 14 churches in Collin and Fannin counties.
Registration for the 1975 76 term opens Aug 14 at 1 p.m. for Whitewright students with buses at 12 30 p.m. and returns at 2 p.m. Classes begin Aug 18. Teachers return Aug 11 12 and work days run through Sept 1.
The 57th annual American Legion Texas convention runs July 17 20 at the Sheraton Fort Worth with about 3000 delegates and 1000 auxiliaries. Congressman Ray Roberts will keynote the opening session, James W White will preside, and Fort Worth Mayor Clif Overcash will welcome delegates. The event features a Parade of Champions prizes near 3000 with a Bathing Beauty Pageant, plus four days of business sessions and social events.
The Whitewright Chamber of Commerce outlined plans for a Christmas season display with a steering committee led by Mike Herber and Jay Philpot and Charles Trucksas to arrange decorations, a parade, and related events. Merchants may supply or select trees for front-of-store display, costing five dollars or supplied by merchants, anchored for wind. The group aims to have music in the parade and to involve bands, while considering delaying chartering the organization due to size. A cleanup by Boy Scouts at the American Legion park after the July 4 program was approved, with thanks expressed to participants. The treasurer reported a balance of 803.41 as of July 1 and a $20 prize approved for Harold Langford in the riding club division of the July 4 parade.
The city of Whitewright plans to apply for a grant to extend its sewer lines in East Whitewright. City engineer John Wortham will finalize the grant forms with cost and work details for submission. The commission also formed a committee to study the future use of a city-owned house near the city hall and authorized pump replacement for Well No 3. A dog leash ordinance was discussed but no action taken, and the oldest police car will be sold to the highest bidder while the newer vehicle remains in service.
Services for Buford Spencer 61 of Whitewright were held at Kentuckytown Baptist church with Rev. Houston Garner and Rev. Lionel Lindley officiating. Burial followed at Wittitee cemetery under Wise Funeral home direction. He died July 13 1975 in Sherman hospital born February 14 1914 in Collin County survived by wife Izola Spencer three brothers three sisters and several nieces and nephews. He was a retired farmer and Ken tuckytown Baptist member. Active pallbearers included Gerry Ricky Junior Bob Spencer Ronnie Hendricks and Herbert Surrell.
Whitewright Class of 1950 wrapped a three day 25th reunion with banquet at Sherman Holiday Inn. They set July 3-5 1980 for the next gathering, joined July 4 festivities in Whitewright, toured the old high school, and remembered teachers and classmates at the Sherman HQ.
Services were conducted at Earnheart Funeral Chapel for Mrs T E Sears a 92 year old Whitewright housewife who died Sunday at Whitewright Nursing Home Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery She was a life long Presbyterian and active in church work Survivors include son Thomas Sears and daughter Martha Emerson Pallbearers listed
