President Truman urged Congress to approve a 3.75 billion dollar loan to Britain saying it would help both nations reach a lasting peace and prosperity. Many lawmakers doubt the measure as opposition to the first postwar international financial deal grows in Congress.
Judge J. N. Dickson of Sherman endorsed the Grayson County Agricultural Club plan to improve farm to market roads. He said the county court will join with the club, noting wartime road deterioration and funding limits. County voters may face higher taxes or a bond issue to fund upgrades. Farmers surveyed by G. O. Peterson show strong interest in cooperation and a better roads committee as part of the club’s program.

The Office of Price Administration will raise ceilings on nearly 90 waterproof rubber footwear items not sold since 1941. The new prices, slightly above 1941 levels, take effect February 4. Production resumed as enough synthetic rubber remains to manufacture boots for men women and children despite wartime shortages.
Harry Hopkins longtime confidant of Franklin D. Roosevelt died in New York at Memorial Hospital. A hospital statement said the 55 year old, once near the White House for three and a half years, died at 11 35 am after an illness with an obscure cause. Hopkins, noted for his quiet demeanor and central role in wartime diplomacy, was born in Iowa and rose to become a trusted adviser to the late president.
Dallas. Charles L. Sheldon, president of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, warned that Texas cotton loses about 500000 bales yearly. He blamed insufficient research funding and cited artificial fibers like nylon and aralac as market stealers, urging more innovation to create new markets. He spoke to the Purchasing Agents Association of Dallas.
Walter Brandon, 6, son of Mr and Mrs S J Brandon of Pecos formerly of Clovis NM, accidentally hanged himself at noon Tuesday while playing on a rope swing in the back yard of Mrs Patternigan in Monahans. He had been on the swing about an hour before his mother called him to lunch and found his body dangling with toes nearly touching the ground.
Washington moves toward House action on a rivers and harbors bill removing the six month postwar limitation. The measure totals 381,968,332 with over 57,000,000 for Texas and 18,733,000 for Trinity River works. Trinity items cover floodways, reservoirs, dam modification, Lavon reservoir, and a nine foot Trinity channel to the Houston ship channel at Liberty.

Five people escaped injury when a 19 foot boat driven by Jim Annesley flipped at Lake Texoma. The vessel struck an underwater object and spilled the five occupants into the water. a government patrol boat towed the boat to dock. Another patrol craft rescued six from a drifting small boat whose motor had died.
M Allin Anderson of Republic Life Insurance Company of Dallas spoke to the Rotary Club about life insurance history and current policies. He noted the U S has 71 million policyholders and $154.6 billion in face value, with Dallas ranking among top cities for insurers and Texas near the top state list. Lt Meador and Colten Hill attended. Billy Mack Williams to be student member in February, succeeding Jack Moss.
A Texas Health Department report states 996 poliomyelitis cases in 1945, about one in thirteen nationwide, with the U S total at 13,733. The department notes no known preventive cure but says isolation, disinfection, and sanitation curb spread. nine Texas cases have been reported so far this year.
Washington reports Rep Bartel J Jonkman of Michigan warned the sugar shortage will worsen. He blamed Agriculture Department officials for alleged negligence in administering the sugar program and said Congress barred subsidy payments on 1946 sugar, restricting CCC actions.

In Camden New Jersey Mrs Lillian Kern ey of Riverside testified to Advisory Master William R J Burton that her husband forced her to lie under the car dashboard as he drove by a girl friend to prevent jealousy. Burton advised divorce.
Whitewright area units push to collect 1600 garments for the Victory Clothing Collection aiding war torn nations. Local chairman W. E. LaRoe leads committees from churches and groups. garments with donor letters are encouraged. Contributions can be delivered to the Palace Theatre and other local offices.
The Army announced that families of officers and top noncommissioned officers overseas will soon be allowed to travel at government expense. Enlisted families below staff sergeant may travel at their own cost unless housing food and medical care are certified adequate by theater commanders. A priority system favors those overseas longest who will stay one to two more years, excluding most other enlisted men returning under the point discharge system.

El Paso police and liquor control agents pursue a suspect after 1600 pounds of sugar are stolen from a boxcar on Saturday night. A grocery firm official says the sugar would last one man under rationing rules for 80 years, while officers also chase a possible illicit still.

Texas land planted to cotton in 1945 produced 56 percent more value per acre than other crops. Cotton and cottonseed on 6,000,000 acres were valued at $233,103,000 in 1945, an average of $38.85 per acre, versus $24.85 per acre for 20,996,000 acres of other crops. Despite an unfavorable season and lint yield of 146 pounds per acre, the cotton premium remained, according to the Texas Cotton Production Committee with USDA figures.
