The Plano Wildcats and White Wright Tigers clash at 7 15 p m Friday in the high school gym in a conference basketball game. Plano leads the district with no conference losses while White Wright fields a strong squad. Tickets are on sale in advance and a large crowd is expected.
COLLEGE STATION Arbor Day will be celebrated Feb 22 marking the 57th year in Texas. Governor Coke R Stevenson issues the proclamation urging schools civic groups and communities to sponsor memorial forests parks and tree plantings statewide. The Texas Forest Service and Education Department back the observance with local forestry groups. Arbor Day began in Texas on Feb 22 1889 when Gov L S Ross signed the act creating the day.
A farm program is scheduled for tonight at 7 30 p m in the Grayson County High School building. Sponsored by the soil conservation and soil building committee of the Grayson County Agriculture Club, the event covers dairy improvements soil building current AAA program and Upper Elm Soil Conservation District. A 15 minute Q A period and a closing moving picture are planned. All farmers and interested parties are invited.
ABILENE bootleggers face a new challenge as Joe Backnes a state liquor control board inspector in Abilene unveils a divining rod to locate hidden liquor. He describes probes revealing caches buried under driveways pits and tamped earth. Earlier he found whisky caches in Jones County with to be secured by sentries awaiting the bootlegger.
The Jaques Power Saw Company announced expansions at its Denison and Mineral Wells plants after orders since January 1 topped 1.5 million dollars. The Denison plant employs 250 people, with one or two shifts likely to be added, and the Mineral Wells location runs a steel mill.
The German prisoner of war camp at Denison Dam closed today and 175 prisoners began their march to the ruins of their homeland. Established in April 1944, the camp supplied labor for the Denison Dam project to U S Army engineers.
Rep. Roger Q. Evans, after talks in Austin, supported combining unemployment compensation with public works jobs. The plan would pay standard benefits plus extra for work on public projects, with adjustments to preserve eligibility. Grayson County may see up to 3,000 unemployed, costing about 3 million annually. A Feb. 16 meeting in Austin was set to discuss details.

Perrin Field will sharply cut activities for two weeks as 2,000 enlisted and officers are reduced to 200 flying personnel due to a lack of mechanics and skilled specialists. Civilians will stay to maintain the field while normal operations are planned to resume by summer with additional mechanics.
A beaver colony was discovered on Lake Texoma with a lodge on the east side of Big Mineral Bay. Marcus C. Nelson, manager of the U S Fish and Wildlife refuge there, said the beavers are felling two foot diameter cottonwood trees as they settle into the area.
G. O. Peterson, federal cotton census representative for Grayson County, reported that 13,794 bales of cotton were ginned by January, about 20,000 bales fewer than at the same point last year.

New York The Army Transport Argentina, first of the nursery ships, docked at 6 30 a m Tuesday carrying 456 British brides and 170 children bound for the United States as part of plans to bring about 65 000 war brides and GI children by end of June.
Gov. Coke R. Stevenson endorsed the Blue Cross hospitalization plan on Blue Cross Day Feb. 21 urging un insured citizens to consider voluntary coverage. He cited coverage for 20,000,000 people across the United States Canada and Puerto Rico and emphasized the societal benefits of non profit hospitalization insurance.

Mr and Mrs R D Maddux received a telegram from the War Department Wednesday stating their son Sgt Jarvis D Maddux has been missing since January 29 while in flight in China. He is a 21 year old Air Corps mechanic who has served three years and spent nine months overseas in North China.
Paul Phillips son of Mr and Mrs W A Phillips recently discharged from the Air Corps after six years service has purchased the Martin Shoe Shop building from Mrs A M Bryant. He will repair it and plans a radio shop opening about March 15. Phillips did radio work in service and was a lieutenant at discharge.
Preston Everheart Post No. 225 American Legion began a drive to raise funds to buy or build a building for a club and meeting place. Twelve $100 contributions were received last week and more 100-dollar gifts were pledged. Committees were appointed to solicit funds and recruit new members, with a goal of $5,000 by March 1. The post plans a Legion park clean up and a summer picnic as membership grows toward 200+.
The Texas State Federation of Labor adopted a program to support liberal candidates in the 1946 campaigns. Secretary Harry Acreman said Texas seeks better representation for the welfare of the people against foreign corporations and criticized the legislature for serving a small minority while most Texans are working people.
AAA administrator W. W. Gunn appealed Grayson County farmers to file cotton insurance claims promptly. About 900 of 1,000+ claims have been turned in at Sherman. 150 to 200 remain. Delays hinder closing out cotton loss accounts. Farmers were urged to secure gin tickets and file with the Sherman office at once.
DALLAS Edward R Bearden 30 of Waco Texas reenlisted yesterday as the 70,000th recruit to join the Army in the Eighth Service Command. Bearden, veteran of five and a half years service, had been honorably discharged on June 5 1945.
President Truman announced a wartime food plan to divert wheat to bread, urging informal rationing and cooperation. He called for milled flour from more of the kernel, limiting wheat in liquor and beer, and a slight rise in meat and dairy production to support foreign needs. The aim is to save 25 million bushels for a 225 million bushel export goal in the first half of the year.
