Denison observes Boy Scout anniversary week with a banquet at Hotel Simpson on February 7 and a county court of honor at the high school auditorium on February 10. A city council fire at the YMCA is set for February 15, with a safety first auto campaign continuing, and scouts may sweep the city on February 9 or 16.
The Pilot Grove club met January 22 at 2 p m in the Methodist Church with six members present. Three new members were welcomed: Mrs. Lovell, Mrs. George Spencer, and Mrs. Bill Dixon. Plans included yearbook discussion, monthly programs, a forthcoming play, and a 10 cent monthly membership fee. Next meeting scheduled for February 12 at 2 p m at the church.
In Dallas Judge Grover Adams court a jury imposed the electric chair death sentence on Lee Roy Merriman for alleged involvement in the December 9 Oak Cliff kidnapping and assault of three girls. The courtroom crowd remained silent as the verdict was read, with officers guarding to prevent disturbances.
Rip the horned frog of Eastland County courthouse is dead. Removed from the cornerstone months ago amid claims of 31 years without food or water, possibly without air, Rip was found late Saturday with its head visible above guarded sand and leaves where it had hibernated. No inquest held. locals believe exposure to sunshine fatally chilled the veteran creature.
Mrs. Nellie M. Cowman of St. Louis won $75,000 in a circuit court verdict against surgeons Dr. P. H. Harmann and Dr. J. H. Crenshaw. She alleged a sponge about the size of a hen’s egg was left in her body after an operation in 1924, causing severe pain until removal 17 months later.

The Cotton Belt Railway will start a faster schedule next Sunday. Fast trains from Texas to Memphis will cut travel time by about two hours. The Sherman bound train will arrive in Whitewright at 11 31 a m instead of 12 11, with no change to the 5 40 p m east bound train.
A Decatur child arrived on January 8, exactly a century after its maternal grandfather J. T. Lumsden was born in Alabama in 1829. Lumsden was 73 when his daughter Mrs. Wallace was born. she is now 27.
Jack R. Ryan principal of Boyd High School was unanimously elected by the McKinney city school board to fill the unexpired term of the late J. S. Carlisle. He is a 30 year old Centreville native, Southwestern alum, pursuing a UT MA, and will also serve as school board secretary at a salary of 5600 dollars per year.
Honor Roll and Term Honor Roll announced for grades one through seven. The lists name students achieving an average of 90 or above with no absences or tardies, identifying for each grade both Honor Roll and Term Honor Roll recipients.

Rev. J. H. Hawkins resigns after three years as pastor of Whitewright First Baptist and accepts a call to Washington Street Baptist Church in Greenville. He will move next week and begin duties February 3. Services this Sunday will be his last in Whitewright.
In Austin the Legislature adopted a concurrent resolution launching a probe into the General Land Office and its relations with the Governor, the Attorney General's office, and the University of Texas board of regents. A committee of three representatives and two senators will have subpoena power to examine records, with the Attorney General's Department assisting as needed. The move follows controversy over university lands being placed on the market for oil leasing by Commissioner J. T Robison.
Constable George Bennett arrested a man in Mill Creek for making home brew. In a struggle the suspect grabbed the gun and was shot in the groin. Raymond Williams fired once, hitting the man in the shoulder. The wounded man was taken to Sherman for medical care and jailed on liquor law violations.
Texas closes quail season January 15 and duck season January 21. The deer turkey and squirrel seasons have already closed for the year leaving rabbit as the only lawful game to shoot.
The Texas Louisiana Power Company announces a public open house on Saturday February 2 from 2 30 to 10 30 p m to celebrate the formal opening of its new power plant and electrical appliance store in Whitewright. Visitors will tour the plant see machinery in operation enjoy souvenirs refreshments music and prizes and guides will explain the equipment.
Roy O. West of Chicago was confirmed Monday by the Senate as Secretary of Interior by a 54 to 27 vote after three days of secret session discussion. Conflicting reports on ballots ranged 52 to 55, but the final tally stood as the majority required with Republicans opposing due to his Samuel Insull power interests.

The Little Citizens Club met in the seventh grade room. Officers elected for the ensuing term were Billie Magar president Maurine Pierce secretary and N B Nicholson treasurer. An interesting program was presented and the next meeting is scheduled for Friday January 25.
A Lake Shore Electric interurban car collided with a Pittsburg-Chicago bus two miles east of Bellevue Ohio, killing at least fifteen people aboard the bus. Rescue was hampered by wreckage pinned under the derailed interurban car. the driver escaped injury, possibly blinded by a snowstorm.
A Senate measure nicknamed the gin marriage bill was passed to require ten days notice before marriage. The proposal, by Senator Julien Hyer of Fort Worth, aims to halt gin marriages and elopements and may reduce divorce by delaying consent. It must clear the House and win the governor's approval to become law.
The State Highway Commission awarded Tibbetts Construction Company of Fort Worth the grading and drainage for ten miles of Highway 91 from Denison to Preston at 80 580 dollars. Grayson County and the state will split half the cost. The project moves concrete road plans forward and signals completion of the county’s highway program.
A Falls County jury found Yancy Story guilty of robbery with firearms in the Krum bank holdup on June 9, 1925, and sentenced him to five years. Ben Burger, county field executive, spoke on Scoutcraft.
Lanius Kincaid closed a deal for 217 acres in Fannin County near 514% miles southeast of Bonham. The county poor farm was sold by the Fannin County commissioners court for 7000 dollars as the county discontinued the farm. Kincaid plans to move to the farm next year and the county funds a new $20000 building to care for indigents.
Mrs. Edward s Alumbaugh of Macon Ga was convicted Saturday of criminal libel for circulating a spurious oath attributed to the Knights of Columbus and sentenced to pay a 500 dollar fine or six months in jail.
