Tesis-Louisiana Power Co nears completion of a modern business office and store room next to the post office. The layout includes office space display area and rear storage room. A formal opening is planned for February 2 with music and souvenirs as the plant begins operation and distribution work may follow.
Miss Callie Taylor the Sun's longtime correspondent at Pilot Grove wed J. D. Lane of Van Alstyne last week but the paper did not learn of the marriage in time for last week's issue. Mrs. Lane writes to resign as correspondent and sends a year’s subscription check.
D. E. Low hosted Lester Haile as guest speaker at last Friday's Rotary lunch. Low discussed the "positive and negative man" with a delineation of humankind. F. M. Echols noted outside-work issues for the year. R. T. Pennington led the program as Ed Douglas handled routine business and committee appointments. Clyde Lucas of Sherman, district manager for Southern Ice & Utilities, attended with Dallas official Ostermuller.
Antonio Ponce, eight, was found chained to a bed and hungry, cared for by Associated Charities while his mother was jailed on drunkenness and disturbing the peace charges. Detectives say he had been chained for more than a week as a guard against “bad boys.”
In Austin lawmakers push many bills regulating motor vehicle license fees. House proposals cut private passenger car fees by about 50 percent while shifting revenue to counties for road work. Commercial and truck fees are increased in other measures from Hunt County and by others as committees prepare substitute legislation.
Mr and Mrs W H Stedham report improving condition for their son Guy injured while trying to kindle a fire with kerosene during furlough from the battleship Texas anchored near erine Roads. Naval officers and nurses from the Norfolk hospital say his status is better though not yet out of danger. He recently moved to the Texas on his own request and serves as an assistant on the staff of the Navy news publication for forces near Norfolk.
The Grayson County Commissioners Court in regular session approved placing 32872.98 in escrow as the county's share of grading bridging and culvert work on a ten mile unit of highway 91 from Denison to Preston Bridge crossing Red River. Bids are advertised to be submitted to the State Highway Commission at its Austin meeting next week.

The Par ent-Teacher Association met at the high school on Tuesday afternoon. A group of third grade girls led a hygiene drill and Miss Mae Hall spoke on Health teaching in schools. Mrs. H. P. Donigan chaired a discussion on How We Make Our Children Steal. Miss Cox of Southern Ice & Utilities demonstrated proper refrigeration. Next meeting set for Tuesday Feb. 19.
Miss Geraldine Cox and A B White were married at the home of Rev H M Cowling with the ceremony officiated. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Cox and has lived in Whitewright. the groom, formerly of Grandview, works for the Texas Louisiana Power Company and has lived in Whitewright recently. After a brief Grandview visit the couple will reside in Yoakum.
A Home Demonstration Club was organized at Pilot Grove in January with eight members. Officers elected were Mrs. Perry Kilgree president, Herbert Taylor vice president, Miss Pauline Binion secretary, Mrs. Tom Binion reporter. Next meeting set for January 22 at the Methodist Church with Miss Inez Derryberry in charge.
The Department of Agriculture reports boll weevil hibernation in 1928 to be about the same as 1927. Examinations at 47 points in four states covered 6767 pounds of moss, with cautions that results cannot determine nationwide weevil numbers.
A Dallas News staffer toured Whitewright last week and learned residents may soon discuss paving several blocks of the business district with potential follow on residential paving. County press echoes the idea as a possible near term civic project though no meeting has been held yet.
Sherman Texas Monday morning opened the hearing in the Mercantile Trust and Savings Bank of Dallas suit to recover from Grayson County 21048.90 claimed as interest on refunded road district bonds. Judge F Wilcox sat in for the county judge R M Carter. Attorneys for the bank were Frank C. Dillard Rice Maxey Freeman McReynolds Hay and Charles C. Allen. Ben F. Gafford represented Grayson County.
Sherman court handed sentences from a year and a day to two years to five men for conspiracy to violate the national bankruptcy act. Max Cohen and Robert Cohen received two years each, Harry L. Cohen 15 months, Joseph Benjamin one year and a day, and Hyman Cohen two years with his sentence suspended. The case involved alleged concealment of assets in the St. Louis Trading Company bankruptcy proceedings of 1925, linking stores in Sherman Denison and McKinney.
In Paris a three year old, Darrell Roy Freeman, died after fumes from an open exhaust pipe warmed an automobile cabin during a midnight journey from Los Angeles to Hammond Indiana. The child lay on the back seat of the car as the couple traveled.
Two youths about nineteen and twenty rode bikes into Ed Young's home west of town and entered while alone. They admitted to Burn Everheart they took a loaf of bread to eat. Held at the Sherman jail after riding to the city stout house on Sunday and arrested Monday by Constable Bennett.
Approximately 27000 persons were killed by automobiles in the United States in 1928. The figure shows a 5 percent rise in fatalities over 1927, per the National Safety Council in a statement issued Monday.
Bonham reports Judge H A Cunningham to draft a petition for a county wide good roads bond issue. H S Cole presided and named chairman of the county good roads committee at a mass meeting last week.
The Sun reports improvement work on State Highway No 42 from Whitewright to Orangeville and Trenton. About 20000 dollars will be spent from state funds with added support from Fannin County road funds and local business contributions. Right of way secured and fences set back as widening grading and surfacing begin.
A home economist tone piece cites the Census Bureau declaring homemakers are women without occupation. It lists domestic chores as work and argues that women caring for home duties are not counted as workers despite full activity at markets, kitchens, schools, and homes.
The Mammoth Cave National Park Association announced the purchase of Mammoth Cave and 2,208 acres from heirs for about $500,000. The association will operate the land until funds allow buying nearby tracts, then donate the entire property to the government for a national park.
Dewey J. Hooper, 37, conductor for the Santa Fe, was run over and killed in the Santa Fe yards at Woodard Oklahoma last Saturday at 6 30 am. He lived in Wellington Kansas and his funeral was held there Tuesday. He is survived by his wife and son, his mother Mrs Elizabeth Hooper of Vernon, two sisters and three brothers including W R Hooper of Whitewright.
Sam H. Stamps of Big Spring area sold 1 050 gallons of milk to Snowhite Creameries in December, earning $336.33 in fifteen days. He milks 29 cows, feeds 40, employs two men, and nets $10 daily from his herd. He splits feed as half balance ration with grind and mix.
Mrs. W. P. Hobby, wife of former Governor W. P. Hobby and head of the Houston Post- Dispatch, died at her Houston home at 1 a m Monday. She served as first lady of Texas from 1917 to 1921 and hosted social events at the state mansion. Born Willie Cooper of Beaumont, she was daughter of Samuel Bronson Cooper, a long-serving U S Congressman from Beaumont. She wed Hobby on May 15 1915, shortly before he became governor.
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Waggoner learned of the death Saturday of Mrs. George Chester in Yazoo City Mississippi. They departed to attend the funeral leaving their daughter Elizabeth at home. Mrs. Chester leaves a husband three children and several siblings.

Smith reports Whitewright Grammar School seventh graders show notable progress after fall winter testing. standardized measures compare rate and comprehension. average reading rate up 29 wpm, about two years gain in comprehension. top performer Guy Hamilton Jr. read 2385 wpm with perfect comprehension.
The Rev. Elmo L. Bateman, former Hilton Christian Church pastor, was convicted in Newark of criminal libel for circulating a fake oath he claimed was sworn by Knights of Columbus members. The maximum penalty is three years imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.
Dr C E Stringer of Achille Oklahoma is to arrive in Savoy to begin practice as the town has been without a physician for several months.

Harve Dennis of Vinita Oklahoma says he set a record by bagging 1,492 crows in the first shot and 2,200 in a second, using dynamite with two neighbors and collecting a bounty for each left crow wing, a claim not challenged to date.

In Macon Georgia Leonard Clark a city fireman rushed into a burning house to save a supposed black child. He seized a doll from a crib and carried it to safety moments before the roof collapsed.
H B Crosby a high school instructor and athletic coach serves as scout master of the local troop. He attended the Scout Executives annual meeting in Sherman last Friday evening with Stanley Cernosek and B B Hall. Reports show active scouts and finances in good form for the year. Friday night the Court of Honor will be held with invited citizens. the hut chimney has just been completed and the room will be warmed for the meeting.
