Mrs. Ralph Bond of Parkland Sportswear advertises for six new power machine operators as six more machines are added to the existing 35 single needle machines. The plant shipped 1863 garments Friday and 900 earlier in the week, with training for inexperienced hires possible.
Whitewright residents contributed 452 75 to a Boy Scout fund drive led by local workers including Mrs Clyde Craig Carlton Johnson Wilson Kai ser James H Gosnell Mrs Mary Lou Ayres B R Vestal Rev Newton Cole C B Bryant III Tom Sears Joe Morgan S T Montgomery Jr Mrs Charlie Ayres Lokey Edwards David Johnson Clint Hennig Ron Faison Jack Meador Earl Blanton J B Dixon and John Biggerstaff. The campaign aimed for 750 with hopes to reach 900 to add 150 to the Scout hut budget. Donations may be left at the First National Bank.
Nina Barnes formerly Nina Hood and her husband J W Barnes will open Nina's Beauty Shop Monday at 503 S Bond Street in Whitewright. Mrs Barnes, a Sherman beauty school graduate, ran a shop there before marriage and previously lived in Goodwater Oklahoma.
Alma Schneider of the Denver Mint announced an $850 payment to an unidentified man in Weiner Arkansas for a three foot pipe that contained dimes nickels and quarters. The pipe coins melted when his house burned and hardened. The mint will melt the bar to remake silver coins.
A column criticizes low attendance at the Chamber of Commerce meeting and urges more business participation. It argues against a plan shifting state tax burdens to gasoline smokers and highway users, proposing a broader tax base and even an oxygen tax as a thought experiment.
Rev. Newton V. Cole, local chair man for the March of Dimes fund drive, aims to raise 750 to fight infantile paralysis. Committeemen include Wilson Kaiser for house to house calls, Clarence Tillett in the business district, Burgher R. Vestal in schools, and S. T. Montgomery Jr. in extracurricular activities. Cole previously led a successful drive, raising over 500. The polio fight remains vital to every family.
Whitewright post office receipts for 1954 rose slightly to $12,464.02 from $12,433.22 in 1953, a $30.80 gain. Postmaster John Biggerstaff attributed the small rise to October and November being much lower, noting the year’s overall result.
Funeral services for Tom J Russell 66 were held at Earnheart chapel with Rev. Bourland and Rev. Martin officiating. Burial followed in Pilot Grove Cemetery. Russell died Saturday in a Tyler hospital after a long illness. Born McKinney July 20 1888 he lived in Pilot Grove for years. He married Fannie Binion in Pilot Grove June 19 1910. Survivors include his wife a daughter two sons six brothers three sisters and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 10:30 in Earnheart chapel for Mrs. Jerome May 82 who died Thursday of a heart attack. Rev. A W Blaine and Rev. Clifford Longino officiated. burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survivors include son John Lee May and three daughters with eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Out of town relatives listed.
Governor Allan Shivers told the Legislature his plan to balance Texas finances includes raising the gasoline tax from 4c to 6c and cigarette tax from 4c to 5c. He outlined broad reforms and warned of a $61 million shortfall in two years, urging lawmakers to reexamine taxation and consider higher college tuition and other measures.

In Waco on Tuesday J Walter Hammond president of the Texas Farm Bureau warned he will vigorously oppose any price fixing bill in the Texas Legislature. He rejected talk of a fair trades act and any measure creating a monopoly, noting Texans favor free enterprise and have defeated monopoly in any form. The note adds a broader US population figure for horses from 1910 to 1940 for context.
A Gaston football fan from Texas commends a school official for declining a payout to switch a Gaston Whitewright game to Kilgore. He praises the coach for standing by the district and stresses that integrity matters more than money, hoping others will follow.

L L Wendell announces the County Line Singing Convention will meet at Marvin Methodist Church five miles east of Whitewright on Sunday at 2 p m. Mrs Wendell invites singers to come, enjoy two hours of singing, see old friends, and view new song books.
Roy Blanton was elected president of the Chamber of Commerce at the annual meeting in Craig's dining room. James H. Gosnell was chosen vice president with Thomas Sears as board successor. Edwin Badgett was re-elected secretary. Other directors include Bob Andrew George Hight and M. B. Hasty.
The PTA holds its January meeting Monday night January 17 at 7 30 in the high school assembly room. Theme is High School Achievement Night. All parents teachers and patrons are invited.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to boost federal worker pay about 5 percent, affecting around 14 percent of the workforce with a projected annual cost of more than 339 million dollars. He proposed funding partly from higher postal rates and a 55 million dollar yearly government contribution to a new federal health program. Senate Leader Johnson supported raises but questioned higher mail rates. House Speaker Rayburn backed the 5 percent rise and opposed first class mail rate hikes citing losses from magazines and newspapers. The move aims to align public salaries with private industry.
