Cureton Named Rotary President in Whitewright

Joe Cureton division electrical superintendent of Community Public Service Co. is elected president of the Whitewright Rotary Club, succeeding Herman Philley. Soon to take office are Bo Petit as vice president Russell Suimeters as secretary Earl Bleaton as treasurer Bill Moe Fatridge and Ralph Hughes as directors. Cureton has lived in Whitewright ten years, hails from Meridian Texas and attended the University of Texas. He and wife Sally have a daughter Teresa Peckham and a son Will a Whitewright High School student and student at Texas Tech.

CP Backs Atomic Energy Project In Texas

Cov. Preston Smith announced an $800,000 TAERF contract renewal through May 1 for two years to advance peaceful thermonuclear fusion research. Attending were Cr. L. Cooke of Community Public Service Co. and nine Texas investor owned utilities along with University of Texas leaders at the Austin Alumni Center. The governor praised leadership expanding fusion research and Texas as a world focus in this field.

FAA Plans VORTAC Tower Installations Near Dallas Area

Annual chili supper hosted by Whitewright Volunteer Fire Dept on March 1 at Firemen’s Hall runs 5 30 p m until crowded out. Donations to the fund of the Greenhand Chapter of Future Farmers support the department’s upcoming year while youths Darrell and Jim Bryant seek prizes at stock shows with opportunities to win a $200 certificate for a registered beef heifer upon calf capture. Tax Payments Lag as City and School Taxes Reach Late Stages

Delinquent city and school taxes are moving slowly almost three weeks after the deadline. City taxes are 81 percent complete with $316,232 collected from a $20,201 assessment, while the school district reports $72,239 received of a $79,998 taxable assessment.

George Topper Sam Montgomery and Lokey Edwards will receive the Golden Rule Award at the Texas United Funds annual conference in San Antonio at the El Tropicana Motor Hotel on February 26. Thornhill Announces Re Election Bid For Whitewright Council

Thornhill, a two year Whitewright city council member, files for re election. Mayor Summers notes he is the sole candidate for one of three council seats up for election April 5. Other terms expiring include Sonny Smith and Chester Slaughter. Election at Firemen's Hall 8 am to 7 pm. Thornhill is a 1939 Whitewright High School graduate, WW II era Army veteran, longtime CPS employee, and 38 year volunteer firefighter with church and nursing home duties. He and wife Estell have daughter Brenda Kay.

Grayson County Awards Bank Bid for County Funds

The Grayson County Commissioners Court met February 18 1969 at 10 00 am and awarded county funds deposits to Merchants And Planters National Bank Sherman after county attorney advised bids could not be changed post opening. Ciengens National Bank Denison initial bid was contingent on an interest rate set by the Federal Reserve.
