Whitewright Booster Club Membership Drive Prospects Grow

The Whitewright Booster Club reports new members enrolled and ongoing efforts to recruit all local businesses. Roy Blanton directs activities with 52 dues payers listed from Blanton Home & Auto Supply to Whitewright Mercantile Co. The club funded park improvements, graveling alleys, a Denison Diamond Jubilee float, and a radio program on KRRV.

Grayson County Baptists Meet at Whitewright

The Grayson County Baptist Association will meet Monday March 1 at the First Baptist Church of Whitewright for a Worker's Conference from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Afternoon sessions will feature W M A and Executive Board meetings. Church ladies will serve the conference meal. Rev Weldon R Drake calls it a privilege to host 38 cooperating churches.

Texas Highway Patrol adds seventy five recruit patrolmen

Colonel Homer Garri son Jr announces the first Texas Highway Patrol recruit school is complete. Effective March 1, fifty five new patrolmen will join the force with new stations planned including Bonham. Additional recruit schools are set for August and December 1948 with examinations in multiple district offices.

Consumers Spent 20 Billion More In 1947 Than 1946

Washington reports show total consumer spending reached 164 billion dollars in 1947 up from 144 billion in 1946. Incomes rose to a record 197 billion before taxes, while after tax income climbed to 175 billion. Personal savings fell to 10.9 billion, about 6 percent of after tax income, as spending outpaced income.

Booster Club activity boosts Whitewright school support

The Booster Club continues to fund and supervise fall advertising, Christmas light displays, and a visit by Santa Claus in Whitewright. It notes ongoing efforts to strengthen the public school system, printing paid memberships this week and adding new dues as firms and individuals join. The committee plans further canvassing of local businesses to expand membership.

Birth rate hits all time high in 1947

Federal Security Administrator Oscar R. Ewing reported that 1947 registered births reached 3,720,000, up 431,000 from 1946 and 785,000 above the wartime peak. The death toll was about 1,448,000, compared with 1,395,617 in 1946, signaling a very high birth rate and relatively low deaths.

Rotary lunch program features piano solos and balloon game

Marshall Hasty presided as Shirley Blanton Jerry Lee Norris and Barbara Nell Hasty performed piano solos and sang with Janis Jane Horton as accompanist. A team balloon bursting contest followed with C. J. Meador and Clay Horton as captains. Horton team won as Meador struggled to inflate his balloon. Soured milk and cream suggested for gravy and baking.

Whitewright Tigers roll to wins over Howe teams

Whitewright dominates Howe Tuesday night with the Tigers winning 23 12 and the Tigerettes 37 16. Top scorers for Whitewright include Wilson 16 Birdwell 15 Morris 3 Blackerley 2 and Beverly Judd 1. For Howe Tillett 13 Coleman 2 and Johnson 1 led scoring with Hestand 5 highest.

In Muncie Indiana Alma Beatrice Lawrence 40 died after a bed fire she said she might die from later. Coroner Eugene Eissman ruled a cigarette started the blaze and neighbors found her dead in the burned bed Saturday night.

Crushed Stone Paves Locust Street Extension

The Locust street extension from Gowdy street west to the concrete highway, about one thousand feet, has an all-weather surface of crushed stone from Stringtown quarries. Referred to as Badgett street, land donated by Edwin Badgett aids a new town outlet to the State highway and future home sites. Neat cottages with basic utilities rise along the cut-off, which sees heavy traffic. City sidewalks absent in other areas lead to convenient blacktop street center strips for pedestrians in bad weather.

Battleship Texas May Return To Texas In 1940s Drive

Texas aims to bring the Battleship Texas to a permanent berth at the San Jacinto monument foot by San Jacinto Day April 21. A $225,000 fund drive must be raised by March 15 led by Gov. Jester and the Texas film industry plus the state Junior Chamber of Commerce. George M. Long accepts Democratic nomination for Louisiana governor

Earl K. Long won a sweeping primary victory over Sam Jones and pledged to push his platform including an old-age pension of fifty dollars a month. With 377,627 votes to 198,785 from 1,654 of 1,878 precincts, he will be inaugurated May 11 after the April 20 general election, hosting a celebration with soda pop hot dogs and buttermilk.
