Mrs. Louis Edward Tatum testified before the exemption board that her husband has not supported her or the two children since last summer and that her father provides for them. The file reclassified Louis Tatum from A4 to A1, subject to early draft, as boards intensify inquiries into dependents and other claims.
Washington argues that the South must grow enough food to sustain the nation and the war effort in 1918. Clarence Ousley warns farmers to prioritize self sufficiency with gardens, dairy, poultry, and crops, urging all regions to act for national needs and avoid profiteering.
The U S Food Administration rules that retailers may sell 70 percent of normal wheat flour needs to farmer trade without substitutes, if farmers provide a written list of home grown substitutes and quantities. The policy applies only to existing regular trades, guiding consumer usage from February 1918 back to 70 pounds per 100 in February 1917.
Governor Hobby announces a special session starting February 26 to push a statute prohibiting sale of intoxicating liquor within ten miles of any army camp or post in training. The plan would close or restrict many saloons in Galveston San Antonio El Paso Houston Fort Worth and other cities with troops. The proposal also makes it a felony to sell or give liquor to soldiers or sailors or to assist them in meeting lewd women.
Judge Freeman yesterday entered a judgment for 1875 against C. E. Schaff as Receiver of the M. E. T. Railway in favor of L. J. Mathews and Orval Mathews for damages from the death of W. J. Mathews killed by a train near Whitewright weeks ago. The money was partitioned with $800 to Juanita Mathews and $75 to Orval Mathews. The suit was filed yesterday.

In Sherman Texas on February 15 in the Fifteenth District Court Judge Cal Freeman presided. An agreed judgment for $10,000 was entered for plaintiff Flora Tryling against C. BE Schaff receiver for M K & T Ry Co of Texas. The award follows the death of her husband J J Tryling superintendent of telegraphic constructions on the Katy killed in a wreck near Bells three weeks earlier.
A. L. Groves, a prosperous local farmer, reports selling poultry worth 3250 over the past two or three months. He recently sold forty hens at a stated price.
Mr Groves sells roosters at 3.00 each and offers 52.00 to a party on Saturday. He keeps Barred Rock chickens to high standard with over one hundred hens kept for eggs to be sold this spring. He also maintains good cows hogs and brood mares in the area.
Former pastor W N Carter will preach at the Church of Christ both morning and evening this Sunday. All invited to attend.
