Chamber says federal school aid unwise and unnecessary

The U S Chamber of Commerce told a House education subcommittee there is no critical national shortage of classrooms and federal aid for construction would turn public education into a federal function. Thomas A Ballantine represented the chamber, noting a surplus of classrooms and urging states and communities to finance local needs instead.

Veterans Pension Raise Approved by House Committee

The House Veterans Committee approved a 10 percent raise in government compensation for veterans with service connected disabilities and some dependent classes. First year cost is about 169 million dollars, decreasing to 164.6 million by year five. For disabled veterans under 50 percent, monthly pay rises from 181 to 225 dollars. Additional dependent allowances for 50 percent disabled recipients also increase.

Board adjourns in secret session fires superintendent

In Honey Grove the board adjourned then met again without press or public and fired the superintendent by a five to two vote. Morrow learned of the second meeting from a board member who opposed the firing. House Cuts 3 Budget Items in Eid Eisenhower Plan

The House trimmed 80.3 million dollars from Eisenhower's 71.8 billion budget and passed a 3,884,927,000 dollar bill providing 2 percent less than requested for the Treasury, Post Office and U S Tax Court. The move signals initial budget cutting by the House this year.

Death of Gladys Reeves in Dallas traffic crash

Miss Gladys Jackie Reeves 30 formerly of Whitewright was killed Monday morning when the car she rode in with a friend was struck at an intersection in Dallas. Funeral services were held in Dallas and Marvin Methodist Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survivors include her parents Mr. and Mrs. Lennie Reeves of Dallas grandmother Mrs. Mary Reeves of Whitewright and grandfather Charlie Cates of Savoy.

Pioneer Grayson County Farmer Dies at 91 in Tom Bean

George Ambrose Skipworth of Tom Bean dies at home after a long life as a Grayson County farmer. Born October 18, 1865 in Kentucky, he leaves his widow Pannie Upchurch and a large family including ten sons, one daughter, 41 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Funeral Saturday at First Baptist Church in Tom Bean with Rev. Bob Scarbrough officiating. Burial in Van Alstyne Cemetery.
