Uncle Joe Cannon Will Not Seek Re election

Washington Feb 13 Uncle Joe Cannon oldest member of the house announced he would not be a candidate for re election from the eighteenth Illinois district. In an eleven word statement he said I am not a candidate for election to the sixty eighth congress. He will be 86 next May 7 and has served twenty three terms including eight as speaker.

80 Foreign Legion Men Coming Home

Washington reports plans to repatriate about 80 Americans who joined the Spanish Foreign Legion for Morocco service. Collected at Cadiz they will be escorted by the American Vice Consul to Cherbourg, sail to New York on the America February 23, with Red Cross covering the return expense.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion met on Tuesday February 3rd for the regular session. After business, games followed and refreshments were served by Mrs R C Brown and Miss Badgett as hostesses for the afternoon.

S P Beckett Dies at 77 Confederate Veteran in Whitewright

S P Beckett, 77, a Confederate veteran and longtime Whitewright resident, died last Thursday night at his home after a year of declining health. Funeral services were at Church of Christ, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery by the I O C F lodge. Federal officers seize U S Property Colt revolvers in Denison

Two local Federal officers visited Denison Monday and took up a quantity of Colt s automatic revolvers bearing the U S Property stamp. Civilians cannot legally own these weapons and an order recently received instructed seizure. An officer said innocent purchasers exist and are asked to turn them in at the local U S Cavalry barns. Later found weapons will subject owners to prosecution.

Hayden W. Head of Sherman Dies

Hayden W. Head vice president of Merchants and Planters National Bank of Sherman died at his home near Woodlake after ten days of pneumonia. A 40-year-old Sherman native, he studied at Austin College and Texas University, practiced law, led local enterprises, and held banking roles. He is survived by wife, three children, a brother Henry Head, a sister Mrs. George Bader, and his father. The city mourns the loss of a rising regional figure active in law, banking, and agricultural organizations.

Sherman Men Act as Traffic Officers

Thirty three men sworn in as auxiliary policemen by the Sherman Police Department to enforce traffic laws and improve road safety. Appointed by the traffic committee of the Chamber of Commerce, they will focus on traffic ordinances on their assigned streets, bond at their own expense, and serve at no cost to the city to reduce accidents and improve observance of laws.

Sulphur Springs on February 12 reports a traveling man at a local hotel was confronted by forty American Legion members for disparaging remarks about Woodrow Wilson and praising the German Kaiser.
