Store Burglary At T H Lively’s Dry Goods

The burglar entered via a rear window last Friday night at T H Lively’s dry goods store. A safe’s outer door was found unlocked and a small steel vault removed containing papers but no money. A few neckties were also taken. Sheriff Roberts and local officers investigated. no arrests.

Reduction In Whitewright Insurance Rates

Mayor Echols with the aid of the city fire insurance agencies filed information with the State Fire Insurance Commission on Whitewright’s fire record for three years. The Commission ordered a 15 percent final rate reduction for 1917, saving the city about $5,000. The mayor added that extra $3,000 could fund street macadamization, park improvements, a natatorium, a shelter house, and support for local clubs and services. the Commission further cut the key city rate by 2 cents based on a map and data supplied.

Grand Jury Recommends County Improvements in Sherman

Sherman, Texas. The December 1916 grand jury reports 274 true bills from 474 witnesses and urges courthouse reconstruction, new jail hospital access, asylum plans to separate whites and blacks, and improved jury and jail facilities. They also note conditions at the county farm and recommend judge reassignment to focus on juvenile probate and commissioners courts. They thank officials and request discharge. North Texas endures severe winter with oats sowing under way.
