New Year holiday observed by Whitewright business houses will close Friday as the year ends. The Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual meeting January 10 at Craig's Cafe to elect officers and conduct business. The Denison Press criticizes Denison Chamber leadership as too predictable while Whitewright residents praise local leaders for volunteering.

Earl Fields nearing Legion post membership quota in Sherman

Earl Fields post commander of the Everheart Thornhill American Legion says 15 members remain to meet the quota. A January 10 meeting in Sherman will feature state leaders. he hopes to report full membership then. Also notes praise for the Here-and-There column and aging insurance bureau visits in Sherman schedule. The penknife origin is traced to quill pen sharpening.

Lighting Contest Winners Revealed by Friday Literary Club

The Friday Literary Club announced winners of its Christmas lighting contest. Awards went to Mrs. Jack Farley for best outdoor lighting, Mrs. Leon White for best decorated window, Mrs. Tom Sears for best decorated door, Sallye and Winnie Hamilton for most unique lighting, and Mrs. Elbert Bennett for best lighting effect achieved at least cost. Fewer participants judged than in prior years, but entries featured more elaborate displays.

Deaths from Texas and California noted in brief notices

Deaths reported for John F. Wright formerly of Whitewright buried in Honey Grove after dying December 20 in Los Angeles from a heart attack. Surviving wife, one son Overton Wright, two daughters and seven grandchildren. Also services for Mrs Charley S Neathery held in Pilot Grove with six grandsons as pallbearers. she died in Penn Apartments and was born in 1873 in Nashville Tennessee.

New York experts report Americans smoked 369 billion cigarets in the year ending December 31, a 4.6 percent decline from 1953 and a 6.4 percent drop from the 1952 peak. Health concerns and increased filter cigarette sales are linked to the fall.

The state commands Paul Smith to answer a divorce petition by January 17 1955 in Grayson County court. Betty Jo Smith filed the suit on December 7 1954 numbered 61794 alleging cruel treatment. Published in Whitewright Sun the notice appears December 16 23 30 1954 and January 6 1955.

Administration To Seek Federal Pay Raises And Higher Postal Rates

The administration plans to ask Congress for 882 million dollars yearly in pay raises for postal and Civil Service workers and armed forces members. It will renew a 233 million dollar postal-rate hike to offset costs, using military manpower savings of about 625 million annually. President Eisenhower will submit these as a package in a January 11 message, with a January 13 request for service member pay, housing, and medical care for dependents.

Settlement Reached In High School Pep Squad Accident

An agreed settlement awarded 9970 to three Bells High School pep squad members injured when a car driven by Alvin Rolls Jr. of Nocona struck their marching formation on Sept 24. The court action named C D Galyon and daughter Jo anne, Floyd Reynolds and daughter Linda, and Jack Newsom and daughter Millie. Four aggravated assault cases with a motor vehicle remain pending in Grayson County court.

Woman Sets House Fire After Christmas Party

Mrs. Margarethe Walther threatened to burn their home if her husband did not leave a Christmas party in Reichenlsheim Germany. He refused. she returned home alone, started the fire, and later told him about it. Damage was estimated at 500 dollars.

Buffalo Rancher Plans Cattalo Herd From Colorado Buffalo

Harry Stewart of Lamont Iowa bought eight Colorado buffalo eight for $850 in Denver cattle sale. He intends to cross breed the cattle with Hereford Brahman stock to produce a new "cattalo" herd on his Iowa ranch.
