The Whitewright school tax office will be closed December 19 to December 27 and January 2. It will reopen December 28 to December 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Whitewright prepares for Christmas as offices close Monday for the holiday. The Chamber of Commerce holds the fourth weekly drawing Saturday afternoon at 2 pm with more than 30 prizes, including cash and gift certificates. Tickets from last week stay in the barrel. new entries added. All winners must be present to claim prizes.
Chuck Wilson of Whitewright has been elected vice president of the Grayson County United Way for the coming year. The United Way board also named John C. Daniel of Sherman as 1978 president, with Larry Hickman of Denison and R. E. B. Fielder of Van Alstyne as vice presidents. Daniel will appoint the local campaign chair, with Mrs Gene Shaw serving as Whitewright chair in 1977 and leading the county in percentage standings after a strong drive.
Whitewright posted a 27 percent increase in 1977 sales tax receipts, reaching 21,094.24 for the year and 3,629.02 in December, against 16,572.58 and 2,950.61 the previous year. Nearby towns also show gains, with Bells, Tom Bean, Van Alstyne, Whitesboro, Howe, and others reporting double digit rises. The Texas comptroller noted 890 cities shared 53.8 million in December rebates, totaling 361.6 million for the year, signaling a strong merchant year and optimistic prospects for 1978.
The English Home Demonstration club of Fannin county visited the 200 Club for a Christmas program. They performed with innovative Kitchen Band instruments led by 89-year-old Lou Sparks and 93-year-old Mrs. Winnie Money. The event included devotional by Rev. Mrs. Campbell, holiday songs, and a SNAP luncheon with 200 Club members.
A $500 donation from Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Hinton of Lockhart helped push Whitewright’s Cemeteries Improvement and Beautification fund past $11,000 this week, part of a $940 weekly total. The drive, though officially closed Nov. 30, continues with gifts earmarked for Oak Hill and City cemeteries. Funds support road work, fencing, and all-weather surfacing, aided by a $46,000-plus federal grant routed through Texoma Regional Planning.
The Cemeteries Improvement Fund drive was boosted by donor lists and responses. Mrs. R E Hickman provided 35 new names on her initial list and continued submitting names. the Hinton couple of Lockhart sent a $500 check. The combined efforts pushed the drive past the $11,000 mark.
