First Overseas Soldier Receives Permanent Discharge
Devere Roberts of Sherman spent hours with friends here Tuesday and is perhaps the first overseas soldier to get a permanent discharge. He served with the 90th Division in the Argonne forests when he learned of his father’s death. He requested and received a sixty day furlough with passports home, and after arriving in New York was detained about two weeks before permanent release was granted. The War Department seems to have issued special orders to allow his return to his widowed mother. Last week Leonard sent a group of returning soldiers and husky ex football players for a game against our amateur high school team, but our boys were unable to score.
