A letter from a reader urges Santa to remind Americans that Christmas centers on Jesus Christ birth and salvation. The writer asks for Christ to be welcomed back in schools and homes, hoping God’s name is honored rather than invoked in vain, and to bless America in the new year.
Local churches and groups announce Christmas activities including Methodist carolers on Dec. 23, Friday Literary Club meeting at Edith Holloway’s home with a homemade gift exchange, and a First United Methodist Church dinner and program with a Children’s Choir. Cub Scouts visited Sunny Villa Nursing Home to present posters. Community Public Service hosts an electricity conservation program.
Plans at the Sam Rayburn Library and Rayburn House mark the late Speaker Rayburn’s birth on January 6. Open houses 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at both sites with films and invitations to friends and officials. effort to declare a Texas-wide observance.
Joe Reeves celebrated his 9Sth birthday with family at his Whitewright home. He has lived there 20 years, farmed south of town, and is the oldest member of Bethel Baptist Church. Nine children were mentioned, eight living, with many relatives from Sherman Howe Garland Plano and other nearby towns attending.
Whitewright residents enjoyed a Christmas program by K 3 at Whitewright Elementary during a PTO meeting. Pat Alexander chaired a committee aided by Faye LeDane Sarah Clark Laverle Mathis and Linda Sullivan.
The Whitewright Chamber of Commerce will sponsor two additional Christmas drawings to finish the program. The third drawing is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in front of the Dairy Queen warehouse on Bonham street, and the final drawing will be at 2 p.m. Christmas Eve at the same site. Edith Jester urged a large crowd for both events as prizes remain to be given away, noting the draws will be brief. Winners Saturday include Homer Gentry, Edith Grider, Nathan Rymer, Jack Bradley, Ida Burchfield, Mrs. B. G. Burchfield, O. E. Head, Dorothy Wilson, Liz Henderson, J. O. Lewis, Kean Lewis, Ora Murphy, Jessie Grumbles, Patsy Armstrong, Tammy Henderson, Debbie Lewis, and Ronald Hansley.
Gloria Roberts of Bells earns national recognition as one of 2 550 Outstanding Young Women of America and earns state title nomination. She is active in First United Methodist Bells Grayson County Home Economists Beta Sigma Phi and American Home Economics Association.
Whitewright schools will close Friday for a long Christmas and New Year holiday. Dick Capps announced the dismissal and classes will resume Monday January 5, 1976. Christmas programs will be held in the schools to mark the season.
Frank Edward Rontuccio, 20, of Trenton died in a one car crash on FM 815 south of Trenton. Trooper Dorrough said he failed to negotiate a curve, the car overturned, and Rontuccio was ejected and trapped beneath the vehicle. He died on arrival at Fannin County hospital. He operated the Minit Mart in Trenton. Services were held in Sherman.
A planning session in Whitewright High School library discussed forming a nonprofit pre school. It would charge about ten dollars monthly, operate three days weekly for three hours daily, and accept 3 to 5 year olds. Funding would come from tuition. January start hoped.
Hodge ties Whitewright single game record with 37 points in a 84 50 win over Van Alstyne as Steve Hodge leads the Tigers to the boys title with 56 35 victory over Pottsboro. Howe takes girls title 42 28 over Van Alstyne. consolation finals go to Royse City and Gunter.
The Community Garden Club in Leonard sponsors a Christmas Tour of Homes Saturday December 20 from 3 to 7 p.m. Tickets sold at any home or the Sumer House on the north side of the square. Homes featured include Joe Sudderth Bill Renfro Eugene Kegans and Dr. Mike Gattis.
Webb Cox, an industrial development consultant, urged Whitewright to pursue a budding industrial district. Speaking at the Rotary Club luncheon, he cited Greenville and Trenton as models, noted financing options, and stressed local backing, land, and labor as keys to attracting small industries and outside investment.
Whitewright post office businesses banks and city offices will observe Christmas Day on Thursday December 25. All will reopen on the usual schedule the day after Christmas with rural deliveries and window service resuming Friday December 26. Schools resume January 5 1976.
Whitewright school district board hired Janice Emerson a Whitewright graduate and North Texas State University alumna as fifth grade teacher to begin after the holidays. She replaces Judy Dark who resigned. The board also approved ESAA funds to hire a counselor and reading teachers. Classes end for Christmas break Friday and resume Monday January 5.
Mrs Nan Robinson and Mrs Florence Lewis led the Christmas program at the Whitewright Community Club in Firemen's Hall. A story reading, a joke tale, gift exchanges, and secret pals were featured. Members recited the Lord's Prayer and answered roll call with My Most Memorable Christmas. Ethel Green served a Christmas dinner for 19 members and one guest, Sue Barklet of Decatur, Alabama. O A Bennett will host January meeting.
