Local merchants plan to stay open until 8 PM all next week to aid Christmas shoppers. XMAS LIGHTS brighten downtown as the season extends color through the holidays. McLauchlin becomes Hasty Chevrolet foreman succeeding Stubblefield. Grant Hoover sends renewal and praises the column.
Obituary notes the 81 year old retired Presbyterian minister Rev W W Alverson died Monday at his West Spruce street home after a heart ailment. Funeral services were held at First Presbyterian Church and he was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery with Masonic rites and IOOF pallbearers. He served churches in several states, married Margaret Galyon, and survived by wife, two daughters, three sons, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Charles Edward Biggerstaff, longtime Tom Bean resident and former farmer and veterinarian, were held at Tom Bean on 2230 Mon day. He died Sunday at Wilson N Jones Hospital Sherman. Burial followed at Wilite Cemetery. He was born December 17, 1868 and was 85. Surviving sons A J Biggerstaff and R W Biggerstaff of Tom Bean, half sister Mrs J E Coggins of Wills Point, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Clay C. Horton 60 died suddenly at the First Baptist Church auditorium during the Rotary banquet in Whitewright. Funeral at First Baptist Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by wife Versa Tate Horton a daughter Mrs David L Johnson and his mother Mrs W H Horton.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T. Benson reduced price supports for oats rye barley and grain sorghums to 70 percent of parity for the 1955 crops from 85 percent this year and eased production controls. Corn support was left to a later decision with a target around 87 or 88 percent of parity. The note adds the Order of the Purple Heart dates from August 7 1782.
A typographical substitution of a comma for a period in a distance notation is noted as harmless in prose but can cause serious legal trouble in official documents. The example references a distance of 1,055 miles and warns of broader risk from such errors.
Sept. S. T. Montgomery Jr. announced Whitewright schools will dismiss Monday afternoon Dec. 20 and resume classes Monday Jan. 3. The extra day fills the holiday break after a successful football season. Lunchroom staff addition was made due to high patronage, now feeding about 200 daily.
Governor Shivers designated January 17 to 22 as Pay Your Poll Tax Week in Texas to spur citizens to settle poll taxes. He cited LWV plans and urged payment as a civic duty to vote in every election. Congress abolished flogging in the Army on August 5, 1861.
Sudden deaths strike Whitewright residents Eugene Hansard and A C Maynard. Hansard died in his truck near home. inquest ruled death by natural causes. Maynard suffered a downtown stroke and died in hospital. Hansard funeral planned at Barnheart Chapel with Church of Christ minister Claud McQuirtz. burial at Witt toe Cemetery. Maynard survived by wife Willie Black and two daughters. no funeral set.
A long list of names is acknowledged for subscription payments to Sun Honor Roll. The roster includes Virgil Smith Sallye Hamilton Joe Reeves H D Bowen Cpl Harold R Bowen and numerous others, with many titles and Mrs. forms among the subscribers.
In North Hollywood Mr and Mrs A C Estes asked their 8 year old son Alan if he wrote Santa Claus. He replied yes and added that he keeps copies of letters he writes. A note mentions Army Engineers completed the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1828.
The notice promotes a gift of a yearly newspaper subscription as a Christmas present. It explains the recipient will be reminded weekly for 52 weeks of the giver’s thoughtfulness and that the recipient will be notified of the gift. It directs readers to the order form in the edition.
Clint C. Hennig received the CPS Efficiency Trophy for his division at a December 10 dinner in Sherman marking the Northeast Texas Community Public Service Company annual contest. R. L. Bowen presented the trophy and a personal prize while praising the division’s record. Ed Blaske received the Edison Electric Institute Lifesaving Medal for his actions in resuscitating a serviceman after an electric shock incident.
Local merchants plan the annual Christmas Santa Claus party for next Thursday afternoon in Whitewright. Russell Summers, chairman of the Christmas committee, says Santa will arrive between 2 30 and 3 30 and distribute gifts to children. Citizens from miles around are invited to attend.
County Judge J N Dickson received a letter from state highway engineer D C Greer confirming details of a proposed Sherman to Commerce highway. The 49.6 mile route would reuse abandoned Cotton Belt right of way across Grayson Fannin and Hunt counties with an estimated cost of 1 925 000 to be built in sections as funds allow.
Nationwide vote favors Ezra Benson plan to cut 1955 cotton acreage allotments to 18 million acres with price supports set at 84 to 90 percent of parity. Texas weighs in 46 068 for and 5 902 against. Grayson County shows 95 percent approval. Brimstone deposits noted in Louisiana and Texas supply 90 percent of US sulfur.
Grayson County schools purchase two testing units to check pupils eyes and ears. The Ortho Rater and Audio meter cost about 950 dollars total and will be kept in the county superintendent’s office for nurses to check out across 19 communities.
Chicago moves to host the 1956 national political conventions. The city previously hosted the 1952 nominating sessions at the International Amphitheatre. Other strong bidders include Philadelphia Atlantic City San Francisco Houston and Dallas.
Sulphur Springs city commissioners approve a 2 percent gross receipts rental tax on all public utilities serving the city. The ordinance also makes it illegal to charge utility rates outside the approved schedule covering telephone telegraph gas and electrical companies.
