The State Highway Department will receive bids on December 14 for widening and reconditioning 7.18 miles of U S Highway 69 in Grayson County from Whitewright to Bells. The Grayson project is part of 315 miles of road work statewide with an eight million dollar estimated cost. Bids also cover about 260 miles of farm roads and 55 miles of state and U S highway work plus an expressway lighting project in Fort Worth.
Clint Hennig president of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce sent a letter of thanks to the Mineola Chamber for the hospitality shown to Whitewright Tigers and Gaston Red Devils last Friday night. He commended publicity, PA system, programs, police protection and stadium light bill payment. He praised Mineola as friendly and courteous and offered future service in return.

The Christmas meeting of the Par ent Teacher Association of the local schools will be held Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the school at 7 30 p.m. Following the business session the program will be under the direction of Mrs Sarah Kilgree who will present the children in the traditional Christmas theme in story and song. Mrs J C McMillin, vice president and chairman of the program committee, will be the leader for the meeting. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.
Funeral services for Alonzo A. L. Scott 79 were held at 2 p m Saturday at the First Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Harold S. Taylor and Rev. C J Graves. Burial at Pilot Grove Cemetery. Survivors include three sons Rufus Haskell R A. seven daughters Lola Wallace Massen gale Kennedy Nicely. many relatives.
President Eisenhower avoided a personal exchange with Senator Joe McCarthy at a news conference. He urged a government run by progressive moderates and said he would not engage in personal attacks. He stressed a broad program to study needs of 163 million people and ties between government and economy. The Civil War note at Front Royal ended with Guardsmen versus Guardsmen.

Washington reports the Agriculture Department's year end estimate of the 1954 government restricted cotton crop at 13,569,000 bales of 500 pounds. This exceeds last month's forecast and 1953 output, with a 9,600,000 bale carryover from prior seasons. Texas is projected at 3,920,000 bales from 7,700,000 acres yielding 244 pounds per acre.
Secretary of Agriculture Benson announced indications point to a 90 percent parity support for the 1955 cotton crop. He noted the level, in effect since World War II, may be confirmed after early 1955 once supply and market data are reviewed. A national referendum on December 14 seeks to extend production controls for another year.
Air Force Gen. B W Chidlaw, Continental Air Defense commander, urged Chicago civilians to stop complaining about jet noise from nearby bases. He said the planes defend against attack and that pilots are not up there for fun, but for protection.

Austin reports two new financing ideas for a 2.5 billion dollar, 20 year highway program. Wholesale distributors urged extending the motor fuels tax to stationary motors and stopping refunds. service station operators proposed a tax on motor oil, a 20 percent gross levy on trade stamps and other charges, expanding the chain store tax, and a gasoline coloring law. The Highway Commission will study these ideas along with earlier proposals and a constitutional amendment.
