Grayson and Fannin County farmers will vote in a nationwide referendum on cotton marketing quotas Tuesday December 13 to decide quota penalties for the 1956 crop. A two thirds YES vote would set price support at 75 to 90 percent of parity and penalties on excess cotton. a NO vote would drop price support to 50 percent and remove penalties. Both counties received higher acreage allotments for next year and individual farm allotments will be issued this week.
Former Land Commissioner Giles pleaded guilty to bribery charges in the veterans land program. He received a six year prison term after two bribe convictions totaling 44 000 from Crystal City attorney J Paul Little, with a third indictment left for hearing. A $33 000 civil recovery judgment against him preceded the criminal cases.
A federal judge ruled that movie studios are not compelled to make their films available to TV. Judge Leon R. Yankwich said refusal to sell was dictated by sound economics. The antitrust suit, brought by the government, argued a conspiracy to withhold products from TV outlets.
The veterans land board voted to forfeit the accounts of 21 veterans for delinquent payments. The brief meeting was attended by Land Commissioner J Earl Rudder Gov Allan Shivers and Attorney General John Ben Shepperd.
