The Christmas lighting contest sponsored by the Friday Literary Club will be held again. Mrs. George Hight, chair of the committee, said details are not yet set but will be announced next week. The period runs Dec 15 to 22 with judging dates and prizes to be determined. Past years showcased many beautiful lighting effects.

In Texas the cotton marketing referendum set for December 11 will decide if quotas and penalties apply for the 1957 upland crop and the level of price support. If two thirds vote yes, price support runs 75 to 90 percent of parity with penalties on excess cotton. a no vote yields 50 percent parity and no penalties. All upland cotton producers 1956 eligible to vote. Extra long cotton voters weigh similar questions.
Postmaster John Biggerstaff urges early mailing to ensure on time delivery by Christmas Eve. He requests clear handwriting on all labels, use of zone numbers, extra inside labels, three cent postage, and including name and address on envelopes to keep mailing lists updated. Mail out-of-town cards and packages by December 15 and start local mail at least a week before Christmas.
The Texas Supreme Court heard a case over the 1955 sales limitation act. San Antonio Retail Grocers Association seeks injunction against Kelly Food Center operator for using loss leaders and restricting below wholesale prices while a rival practice is left unchallenged. A district court previously ruled the act unconstitutional, sending the matter to the high court for decision.
The government authorized federally insured commercial banks to raise interest to 3 percent on savings accounts and longer deposits starting Jan. 1. The move raises the ceiling from 2.4 percent and also allows 90 day to six month deposits to earn 2 percent, expanding funds for investment.
Fannin County commissioners approved another section of the old Cotton Belt railroad bed from Bailey to Wolfe City. The 10.1 mile stretch, with 4 miles in Fannin and 6.1 in Hunt County, is slated for 1957 58 state construction contracts. The highway now runs from Randolph west to Whitewright and to Tom Bean, with the Randolph to Bailey segment to follow.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe L. Reeves of Whitewright celebrate their Golden Wedding with an open house Sunday December 9 from 2 to 5 p.m. Married in Whitewright on December 9, 1906 the Reeves have nine children, 13 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. They are lifelong Whitewright residents and Bethel Baptist Church members.
Malicious damage to rural mail boxes in the Whitewright area is under investigation by the Postal Inspection Service and the Sheriff's Department. At least two boxes were struck by gunfire, with penalties up to 1000 dollars fine and three years in prison.
Gov elect Price Daniel argued that racial segregation in public schools should be decided locally and would study a Shivers committee proposal to shift defense of segregation to the state. He noted Legislature can act on other issues and planned to attend Senate organization before his Jan 15 inauguration.

Harold Macmillan asked to suspend $82 million in interest on the 1945 loan while offering to pay $56 million due. The State Department said it would seek congressional support and view the proposal sympathetically.

Adlai E. Stevenson announced he will not pursue a third presidential bid. He plans to resume law practice in Chicago January 1 with colleagues W. Willard Writz, William McBlair Jr., and Newton N. Minow. He said his interest in the Democratic Party will continue to help where possible.
