Townfolk praise the Whitewright fire department for controlling a Monday night blaze at Mrs Murray Bryant's home. Some responders were at a statewide firemen's meeting in Pottsboro but on duty crews contained the flames, preventing spread to nearby houses amid strong winds.
The County Line Singing Convention will meet at Ida Sunday at 2 P M to elect new officers and choose a conductor. L L Wendell invites all singers to attend and voice opinions while enjoying the program. A note adds that one twentieth of the world population lives south of the equator.
Grayson County plans to grant funds to incorporated cities towns and villages with volunteer fire departments after January 1 1957 if contracts with the county are signed. An attorney general opinion said funds may be used for equipment. About $10 000 may be set aside for rural fire calls with payments by contract per call and total to depend on participating municipalities.
The menu for Monday through Friday lists daily offerings including cheese and spaghetti casserole with a Bologna slice and vegetables on Monday, meat loaf with escalloped potatoes and peas on Tuesday, red beans with ham hock and cabbage slaw on Wednesday, hot pork roast on buns with chips on Thursday, and sliced meat with green beans and mashed potatoes on Friday. Desserts include doughnuts, cookies and ice cream, cinnamon rolls and mince pie.
The Texas State Teachers Association Legislative Committee voted to ask the Legislature for a 399 annual base pay raise for teachers. Starting teachers would move from 15.58 to 17.77 daily pay for a 180 day school year. The request follows a convention policy statement and is described as a realistic measure to fund with state money.
The Agriculture Department urges farmers to remove 20.3 to 25.365 million acres from wheat, corn, cotton and rice production for the 1957 soil bank acreage reserve. It sets base payment rates: wheat 1.20 per bushel, cotton 15 cents per pound, corn 0.90 per bushel, rice 2.25 per hundredweight.
Heavy damage reported at the residence of Mrs. Murray Bryant when a blaze broke out around 8 p.m. Monday. Firefighting efforts prevented a larger conflagration as flames spread from the central heating plant through duct work to a kitchen wing. Upstairs furnishings suffered smoke damage while most downstairs furniture was removed. Insurance covers losses. the main house dates to the early 1900s with later remodeling in the 1930s.
First Baptist has subscribed about $200 toward the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. The goal is $500 to aid Southern Baptist foreign missionaries. The church will extend opportunities to honor Christ on His Birth Anniversary each Wednesday and Sunday in December. A map shows ten mission lights with four burning. each new $50 gives a new light.
Land Commissioner Earl Rudder told 13 000 veterans awaiting Veterans Land Program purchases that bond funding will be delayed. He said the extra 100 000 000 in bonds will not be available until April May or June as printing selling and delivering the bonds takes time.
The emergency drouth relief program in Texas was extended from December 31 to March 15. Farmers may file applications by February 15 to receive low prices for hay and feed grains. Virtually all Texas counties are eligible under the program.
Santa Claus will visit downtown Whitewright on Wednesday December 19 at 2 p m. Joe Meador, chairman of the organizing committee, announced the event. Children will receive gifts of candy and all are invited to greet him at the appointed time.
Postmaster John Biggerstaff urges early mailing under the Mail Early For Christmas program due to rising Christmas mail volume. He notes card flow matches last year but parcel post gifts are behind schedule and advises air parcel post or special delivery for out of state items. He stresses the value of thoughtful timing over Christmas Eve delivery.

Funeral services for Elbert Earl Sullenger 64 are at 2 p m Friday at Tom Bean Baptist Church with Rev. Scar borough and Rev. Griffin. Burial at Wittitee Cemetery Kentuckytown. Sullenger died suddenly of a heart attack at his Whitewright home. He was born December 8 1892 near Whitewright. Survived by wife Bertha Trosper one brother L V Sullenger Greenville and several nieces and nephews.
W Walter House 77 died last Thursday in Wichita Falls. Funeral held at 2 p m Sunday at Grants Chapel Methodist Church Grants Chapel Ark burial there. Born May 20 1879 at Grants Chapel he married Gennie Ballard there in 1897. Retired saw mill foreman farmer and Methodist Church member. Survivors include wife three sons G A House W W House Jr Wall ace C House of Fort Worth three brothers Luther Lawrence Jesse and three sisters Mattie Van Horn Eddie Bright Nora Cash seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Charles Louis Gentry 77 retired ginner and real estate man were held Saturday at 2 30 p m in First Baptist Church Trenton. He was born Sept 5 1879 in Nobility, son of William and Susie Gentry. Burial was Burns Cemetery. He married Florence Webb Feb 8 1903 at Nobility. Survivors include his wife two sons five daughters two brothers two sisters and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Statisticians compare purchasing power of the dollar with the Dow Jones average since December 7 1941. The dollar’s buying power fell by about half while the Dow rose from 116 to 495, a 326 percent increase, illustrating stock investments as an inflation hedge. Peacock plumes noted as medieval helmet ornaments.
A special Christmas program will be presented at the First Baptist Church at 7 p m on Sunday Dec 23 announced by Rev Fred Waldrop pastor. Members of various churches are participating in a pageant and carols with rehearsals each Sunday and Wednesday at 8 o'clock.
Ernest J. Lilley, elected council member on December 6 and sworn December 11, was chosen mayor by four fellow councilmen Albert Martin Ralph Porter B McDaniel and Carl Flannery. The installation marks Denison’s move to a city manager form of government. Lilley long served Whitewright residents and now leads the Lilley Ayres department store in Denison.
Three Whitewright 4-H Club members shared honors at the Grayson County awards banquet in Sherman held last Thursday night. Ruth Elaine Williams and Bobbye Kay Cawthon won the clothing award while Donna Kay Franklin earned the home improvement award. Tom Bean's Roy Chumbley won in boys agriculture and John Chumbley in meat animals with local bank sponsors from Whitewright Bells and Tom Bean.
Joseph J. Malec of Austin, executive secretary of the Texas Service Stations Associated, warned that federal oil lifts for Western Europe and Middle East commitments will push up prices at stations. He cited a December 1 increase in lubricating oil and said gasoline prices are likely to rise too.
W C Daniel new national commander of the American Legion told the 13th Texas State Guard conference that the United States stands on the brink of a fourth world war. He urged redirecting foreign aid funds to strengthen defense and said Korea was World War III, while World War V would be fought with sticks and stones.
The Texas Safety Association predicts traffic accidents will cause an economic loss of more than 150 million dollars in Texas this year and about 5 billion dollars nationwide.
Chicago reports the second annual nationwide observance of Christmas for canines to honor homeless dogs on December 13. Santa Claus will visit and present treats to the dogs.
