Whitewright city officials, after state inspection, pursued measures to retain a first class fire insurance key rate. A new concrete storage reservoir doubles water capacity, enabling 100000 gallons reserve for fire protection and improving pump logistics. Additional gains include credits for night watchman and night shift arrangements, plus a town storehouse and upgraded equipment.
In Pittsburgh, Pa on December 3 a retired Southern banker Jesse L. Lemon died in a meager room where he lived with a coworker. He left $500,000 and his home after a feud with his wife eleven years prior. Lemon had been earning $18 a week as a sewing machine company collector and had a son Millard Lemon killed in France. A brother William Lemon of Texas is believed to survive. Maria Nichols of Acworth Ga arranged burial.
The sixty eighth congress met in Washington for a farewell session with limited business ahead of annual appropriation bills. Cummins presided in the Senate and Gillett in the House as oath of office was administered to new members and committees prepared to inform President Coolidge. Sessions adjourned in memory of departed senators and representatives.
The Cecil B. DeMille production Feet of Clay will screen at the Odeon Theatre next Monday and Tuesday. Cast features Rod La Rocque Vera Reynolds Victor Varconi Ricardo Cortez Julia Faye Theodore Kosloff and Robert Edeson. Adapted by Beulah Dix and Bertram Millhauser from Margaretta Tuttle’s serial.
The old W. T. Noe homestead southwest of town burned Wednesday morning. Occupants Mr and Mrs William Hardcastle were home. fire likely started from an oil stove left burning. Mrs Hardcastle removed some furnishings. building and contents partly insured.
Mrs. H. B. Pender, 77, died suddenly Saturday afternoon while driving with her daughter Mrs. Ben Looney. Attendees at the Greenville funeral Sunday included Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gordon Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Chess Pope, with Will Pender, formerly of this place, among the mourners.
State First Insurance Commission will withhold re rating until pumping plant upgrades are finished and proper credits filed. Whitewright holds a low key rate saving city property owners thousands in fire insurance premiums. Improvements lower rates also benefit residents through enhanced facilities.
State Health Officer Dr Malone Duggan warns diphtheria rises as schools reopen in winter and urges parents to vaccinate children with toxin-antitoxin. He notes rural kids lack immunity and stresses avoiding shared cups and proper hygiene.
The Rev. Graham McMurray of Greenville preached both morning and evening at Central Christian Church last Sunday. He was accompanied by singer Mr. Shaw and about thirty five Greenville and Trenton friends who arrived for the service and shared lunch with members.
The Dickerman home hosted a festival Thanksgiving with Mrs Minnie Blake and her daughters Mrs Edith McKeon and Mrs L S Stephenson visiting from Sherman. Mrs B S Dickerman of Sherman and Mrs E F Dean of Dallas attended the sumptuous dinner with family members. Mr Dickerman owns the National Battery Station in the city.
D. 5. McMillin, director of the home for aged Masons at Arlington and member of the grand lodge committee on Masonic Jurisprudence, attends the annual sessions of the Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter at Waco.
Extensive repairs are underway at the Methodist church. After carpenters finish, the edifice will be repainted and the pews and interior woodwork revarnished.
Mr and Mrs Sewell McKinney of Tioga visited Mrs McKinney s father J E Webster who has been sick for weeks. Webster is considerably improved and gaining. The report notes the family s concern and progress during the illness.
Mr and Mrs Benjamin S Montgomery announce the engagement of their daughter Estelle to Herbert Jenkins Bradshaw Jr of Abilene. The marriage will take place on Tuesday December 28.
Miss Dorothy Gordon spent the weekend in Sherman as a visitor. She toured local sights and stayed with friends, enjoying the hospitality of the community.
Sixty eight persons killed and 224 injured, total 292 casualties, at Texas railroad highway crossings in nine months ending Sept. 50. Most accidents from collisions between cars and trains. Data to aid Texas Council of Safety meeting in Austin December. July worst month with 13 killed and 33 injured. August and September each had 6 killed. 42 and 20 injured respectively. Causes include attempting to beat trains, stalling on tracks, and striking locomotives or trains.
Members and several visitors attended a meeting where Miss Cooper demonstrated pastry. Hot chocolate and cake were served. The club plans to meet Mrs Lanius Everhart on December 5 with Christmas suggestions led by Miss Cooper.
Bailey Montgomery resumes work in Dallas after six to seven weeks in hospital recovering from severe burns from a gasoline explosion. Friends here are glad he is able to go on the job again.
Eugene Everheart returned to Jacksboro for a visit then departed for Mexico where he has accepted a posting near Mexico City. He plans to report back in a few weeks on Governor Calles' administration as it progresses.
M. E. Greenway of Cameron has been employed as service manager of the Chambers Motor Company. He has fifteen years experience as an auto mechanic, spent eighteen months in the Ford plant at Detroit, and served the past four years as service manager for a leading Ford agency in Texas.
Ford Motor Co announces a price reduction across several car types effective December 2. The Sedan drops by 25 dollars with corresponding cuts on other models.
Mrs H C Willis of this city was chosen as a trustee of the Texas Woman's College in Fort Worth. Her daughter Minnie Willis is a student at the Methodist institution for young women.
No improvement is reported in the condition of George Reeves a well known farmer two miles east of town who has been ill for seventeen months Reeves is about 65 years old and the illness is described as serious.
Red Seal merchants plan a street auction Saturday afternoon where valuable merchandise will be distributed free to customers who use Red Seal money provided by sponsoring businesses. The event uses the auction as a method of gift distribution rather than profit.
J. C. Parsons hosted friends for a watermelon feast featuring a melon weighing fifty pounds grown near Lubbock. He brought the oversized fruit back with him after returning from Lubbock several days ago.
A touring car from Madill Oklahoma carrying six others overturned on the Greenville road east of town. Passengers including Rev Laird and Miss Hart were injured. Antwine severely damaged while Hart and daughters escaped unhurt. They were en route to Greenville for a new orphans home dedication and later traveled home by rail.
President Coolidge travels to Chicago aboard the sleeping car President Grant on a regular train with Mrs. Coolidge and a party. The White House lists guests including Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Stearns, C Bascom Slemp, Capt. Adolph Andrews, Major J. F. Goupal, and Senator McCormick and wife.
At Central Christian Church last Thursday night a free will collection of 27.50 was taken. The funds were turned over to the mayor to supplement other sources for providing Yuletide comforts to local homes in need.
Firefighters responded to a call at Mrs. Walker’s East Whitewright residence last Friday near dusk for a roof fire caused by a defective flue. The blaze was controlled quickly with chemical apparatus and the loss was covered by insurance.
The ladies of the Presbyterian Church will stage an annual bazaar Friday and Saturday at the Gordon Clothing Company store. A lunch will be served Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Cotton Exchange building. Edna Rathbun, secretary.

The precinct singing convention attracted many local and out of town attendees last Sunday. The next fifth Sunday convention will be held at Canaan. On the third Sunday this month the Fannin County Jae singers near this city will perform at Canaan.
Mrs. Maude Dickerson of Kentucky, sister of Mrs. McMillin, visits with Mr. and Mrs. Moss of Garland over the weekend. The Mosses are noted as guests of the McMillins and the Dickinsons have previously made many friends during prior visits.
A thousand laughs will fill the grammar school auditorium Friday night December 12 as the high school football players stage a womanless wedding. Proceeds go to retire debts incurred during the season.
Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Thomson of Kiowa Oklahoma spent the first of the week here with his mother Mrs. J. B. Thomson.
The man arrested by the sheriff at Emory and held in the Sherman jail over the death of Savoy Lewers of Calera Okla was released due to insufficient evidence to file charges. Sheriff Everheart and deputies pursued lines of inquiry across counties and into neighboring states seeking the murderer.
verdict finds Alva Townsley guilty and sentences him to life imprisonment for the October 17 fatal shooting of Charles Fields during a Georgetown Giddings High School football game. John Fields, mayor of Giddings, was present. Charles Fields’ son played in the game.
At Whitewright grammar school last Friday evening a Dunning demonstration recital drew praise. Mrs A G Phippen of Dallas, former resident and booster, led the program explaining the Dunning System of Improved Music Study. Helen Hunt seven and Mary Jane Hubbard aged five displayed remarkable harmony and memory. Mrs Annette Harp, local Dunning teacher, presented each girl a box of candy.
A light rain fell Tuesday with more precipitation Wednesday but not enough to replenish wells and streams. Wheat looks good though lower in acreage than last season. the community otherwise has adequate rainfall.
Lester Short and Misses Maurine May and Lucile LaRoe left this morning for Belton to attend the State meeting of the High School Press Association at Baylor College. The three are members of the Student's Reporter staff of the local high school.
