Gomer May led the Rotary Club luncheon with Emory Christian of the Whitewright district relief office as guest speaker. He outlined relief progress and employment hardships while civic groups discuss a recreation center to support school athletics and outdoor recreation this year.
H P Donigan local ginner and cotton buyer announced a plan to start buying cotton Saturday morning with no extra expense added. He expects prices to improve from when tax exemption certificates were issued, predicting a crowded market. Through Wednesday night Whitewright’s three gins had ginned 1056 bales, up from 489 a year ago, with cotton around 13 1 2 to 14 cents and seed about 42 dollars per ton in the Dallas spot market.
Harold Doss of Whitewright won the Public Weigher seat for Precinct No 3 defeating six year incumbent T R Brice by 139 votes. Doss total 597 Brice 458 across eight voting boxes including Whitewright South Bells Kentuckytown Bethel Pilot Grove Tom Bean Ida and Cannon. County chairman reported only precinct totals.
Grover Burton of McKinney defeated James S. Kone of Sherman for Flatorial Representative in Saturday’s election. Kone carried Grayson County by a large majority, but Burton’s strong showing in Collin County secured the victory. Mr. Burton is a lawyer.
A short rain ended 80 days of drought in Whitewright with .46 inches at the city pump plant on Monday and a similar shower on Tuesday. The rainfall settled dust and revived vegetation but did not soak the ground deeply.
Bonham voters voted 282 in favor and 423 against Sunday picture shows in a Friday election. This marks the second time Bonham residents have rejected Sunday operation despite a law allowing municipalities to decide.
Catalogue for the Red River Valley Free Fair lists a six day expo from Oct 1 to 6 with cash premiums. The directorate limits the Red River Valley to specific Oklahoma and Texas counties, poultry show open to all, and a noted absence of new exhibit departments due to conditions. Grayson County officials release final results with Allred leading the Democratic gubernatorial nomination by 2 212 and totals for governor lieutenant governor attorney general railroad commissioner supreme court associate justice and local races. Total vote cast 11 306.
James V. Allred, Democratic governor nominee, returned to Austin from Wichita Falls with primary returns. He noted Tom Hunter had not sent congratulations yet, calling him a nice fellow despite the delay. Both candidates spent election night in Wichita Falls and remained there for days.
Miss Tommie Chenoweth will open fall music studies in the schools September 10 with instruction for all grades including pre school. Enrollment before school will be appreciated.

The five room cottage of O. L. Hannah and family was destroyed by a Wednesday 3 am fire. The north west room was the origin, family awakened in time to save two mattresses a settee and a rocker. Building and contents insured for 750 dollars.
Rev. and Mrs. W. A. Kirkpatrick longtime Whitewright residents celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary Friday from 4 to 9 p m at their West Grand avenue home. Friends will call to extend congratulations and best wishes. The couple spent their married life in Whitewright with Rev. Kirkpatrick once a Presbyterian minister now retired. All children will attend.
Final counts show James V. Allred leading Tom F. Hunter by 44 346 votes amid 948 746 total statewide ballots from 252 counties with 211 complete. Major state races include Allred 495 546 to Hunter 452 200 for governor and Sharp 445 655 to Lattimore 428 461 for Supreme Court.
Fort Worth hog prices surged to 7.60 per hundredweight, the highest since 1929. In six weeks values jumped 3.10, with top butchers at 4.50 on July 14 amid feed shortages and rising demand.
Neel Davis of Bonham opens a cleaning and pressing plant in the building beside the gas office in Whitewright. He brings eleven years of Bonham experience to the new business and runs an advertisement in this issue. In recent weeks Whitewright adds a meat market, beauty parlor, and this cleaning plant.

Fifty one head of cattle owned by Russell & Horton were slaughtered as U S Government purchases began in the Whitewright region. Calves sold at four dollars each and cows at twelve to twenty dollars. total 143 head sold to the Government, 91 shipped to Sherman.
Foundations for the new Baptist Church are underway with concrete pouring begun Monday. Excavation to 11 feet ensured pillars rest on solid rock, deeper than initial estimates. The old edifice is being razed by about ten workers, salvaging lumber to be reused in the new building after 48 years in place since 1886.
Mr. and Mrs. D E McCoy Jr retired Friday from a wedding trip to Oklahoma City Turner Falls and other Oklahoma points. The bride Miss Helen Reece is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs Ira Dodson of Bells. They married August 20 at Midill Oklahoma with Rev Dale officiating. He works as a truck driver for Kraft Phenix Cheese of Denison. They reside west of town and receive friends’ congratulations.
Jack Birdwell and Golden Eddie Taylor wed Saturday at 2 PM in Randolph at the home of Rev Olen Robinson. The officiant was Rev Robinson. Friends extend congratulations and best wishes.
Roy Ayres and Fannie Reynolds were married at 6 15 Friday evening at Rev C W Dennis home in Whitewright. The couple will live in Ida community. Attendees included Mrs Ned Ayres Cecil Reynolds Mark Ayres and Sarah Jane Ayres. Gomer Graves plans to move to Corsicana for work at Kimbell Milling Company with Hugh Trotter succeeding him at the local properties.
