Whitewright public schools begin a 36 week term on Monday Sept. 10. New in the high school are agriculture and business training. H. W. Key heads the staff with W. S. Cunningham as high school principal and vocational agriculture teacher.
Homer Jacks of the Andrews farm north of town was injured Sunday at about 9 am when his farm wagon was struck from behind by an automobile on the Whitewright Bells highway just north of the Anderson filling station. Jacks suffered a broken shoulder and several ribs, was taken to Bonham hospital, and brought home Wednesday. The car driver and companion were arrested. driver charged with intoxicated driving and bound over to the grand jury, other man fined for drunkenness. Local negroes also fined for disturbing the peace and drunkenness in Judge Cantrell’s court.
Edward 5%. Alexander a respected farmer dies at his son’s home in Whitewright Texas. Funeral held at Methodist Church with Dr J F Fender and Dr B Wrenn Webb officiating. Interment at Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by five sons and thirteen grandchildren. Fort Worth Star Telegram staff member E D Alexander among survivors. Funeral arranged by R R Waldo.
Whitewright prepares for a fall grid season as 17 players report for practice under coaches J. K. Bryant and W. S. Cunningham. Most players have little or no prior football experience, with Shorty Childress the lone veteran. A 10-game schedule is being sought with home games to be favored, and a new field is laid near Miller Hill.
Texas legislators push sterilization as a crime prevention measure citing national statistics. Senator Arthur P. Duggan proposes a bill to banish reproduction by the unfit, citing Oklahoma and California laws and research on heredity and crime. Other lawmakers back revising the criminal code and reforming clemency powers. Planks for the Texas Democratic convention in Galveston include these changes.
A large gathering in Whitewright heard certificates issued to farmers to sell cotton without the Bankhead tax. W W Gunn and Dan Scott distributed certificates with help from the local cotton committee. Over 100 bales sold Wednesday, with more expected as the public cotton yard holds 1,000 bales. The Wednesday sale brought 13.80 per hundred.
Rotary Club vice president C. J. Meador chaired a luncheon program featuring Ben Burger scout executive of the Texas Oklahoma council. Burger cited a study showing many prisoners are aged 18 to 26 and noted Boy Scouts participation correlates with lower arrest rates while Dr. F. D. Layman reported over a year of perfect attendance.

Fannin County sheriff investigates after 14 year old girl abducted from home eight miles northwest of Bonham Sunday afternoon. J. H. Kean reports a man in a black car entered the farmstead, forced the girl to watch while he took a pistol and $1450 from a trunk and drove south after leaving.
Statistics show American manufacturers produce 125 billion cigarettes annually. If laid end to end, that total would encircle the Earth’s equator 217 times.
Deputy Sheriffs McDaniel and Yeary raided a Cotton Belt Negro house on Wednesday evening, seizing 22 pints of gin, 22 pints of bottled in bond whisky, and six gallons of corn whisky. The liquor was taken to Sherman as evidence. Names of those charged were not available. Reports say only Negroes were involved, with a white person alleged to have furnished liquor. The residence is occupied by Tish Freeman, a Negro woman.
Herman Britton of Randolph was killed in a collision with an oil truck on Highway 160 north of the Y. J Q Fields of Sherman drove the oil truck. Britton, 34, was a traveling salesman and Randolph school board member. The crash closed when Britton appeared to turn into a filling station driveway.
The City Commission met Monday night and adopted the annual budget after adjusting for a drop in tax valuations. The tax rate remains at 1.70 while a new fire department truck chassis was purchased to replace aging equipment. The old bed and equipment will be mounted on the new chassis to ensure reliable operation.
Dr. Frederic Howe, AAA consumers' counsel, criticized merchants who urged canned produce purchases to avert shortages. He called the tactic unjustified and noted supplies should be about six percent higher next year. Local mountaineers in North Carolina describe rhododendron districts as "hells" due to thick growth.
A week long rainfall totaling 1.94 inches was recorded at the Whitewright city water plant under Ray Cates. The showers ended a 80 day dry spell, helping grain and garden seed, refreshing lawns and pastures. Statewide drouth relief follows torrential western rains. Local farmers buy millet seed in Lubbock and sow grain for winter feed. About 300 carloads of Johnson grass hay were shipped to meet demand while rains may spur a second hay crop.
North and South contest for Whitewright softball crown sees South win 9-0 Tuesday. North Bulled by Barbee as Montgomery’s perfect game on Tuesday seals Yankee win 11-9. Third game Friday pits Montgomery against Bryant. local All-Star team to Edible on Thursday for a double header.
