The merchants' free rodeo attracted a big crowd last Saturday with bronc riding steer riding calf roping and wild cow milking. Shows run at 2 30 pm and 8 00 pm with grandstand seats 10 cents and standing room free. Promoted by George G Pope Howard McFarland and D E McCoy with local merchants funding the event.
Cecil Spindle of Denison son of Dr and Mrs J F Spindle of Whitewright was seriously hurt at Ray Yards in Denison Wednesday morning. His foot was crushed by a freight car wheel requiring amputation above the ankle. Relatives including Dr J F Spindle and Dr Jack Spindle went to Denison after the accident.
Judge G P Webb named chairman of Grayson County advisory committee for the Texas Centennial at the Sherman Chamber of Commerce meeting. Mrs Ben F Boydstone named vice chair, J Newell Johnston secretary treasurer. Committee to assist organization and welcome visitors in 1936 with highway beautification and historic spot highlighting planned. Women meet in Denison Saturday to plan beautifying Highway 75 gateway.
County agent B F Gray outlines options for Bankhead allotment certificates to speed cotton sales. Interim tax exemption certificates may cover up to 50 percent of allotment for eligible farmers, requiring gin designation and later pickup with dinner. Alternatively farmers may pay the gin with a certified check to hold bale tags until certificates arrive, simplifying the process.
President Roosevelt authorized a new 12¢ per pound cotton loan through the Commodity Credit Corporation to assist Southern farmers. Growers may borrow against their cotton at 12¢ a pound, with detailed rules similar to last year’s 10¢ loan, to keep markets orderly and reduce forced sales amid concerns over a textile strike and demand.
Sheets of rain broke the worst drouth in history across parts of the Southwest. The Texas Panhandle and portions of Oklahoma saw precipitation from light showers to three inches with more rain forecast. Whitewright remains dry after 73 days of heat, as partly cloudy skies return and hope for rain grows.

H W Key superintendent of Whitewright Public Schools and Miss Lucy Thornton daughter of Mrs T E Thornton of Ida were married last Sunday at the home of the bride’s uncle and aunt in Chickasha Oklahoma. They reside at Penn apartments in Whitewright Texas. The bride graduated from Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha and taught in Burden High School. Key is a Whitewright High School alumnus and Texas Christian University graduate who has been principal and was elected superintendent last spring.
The U S Census reports Texas birth rate at 17.9 per thousand, ranking high among states. Last year 107 924 births were registered with the State Health Department, highlighting the importance of timely birth registration for passports schooling voting age and other records.
July beer tax receipts totaled $25,316,018 while overall liquor taxes reached $28,823,580, a post repeal high. Beer revenue rose $2,444,428 from June and nearly doubled December 1933 figures, with distilling taxes at $7,416,475 versus June.

Harve Lively, 52, traveling salesman from Van Alstyne Texas, was hospitalized in Monroe after a man he picked up near Greenville Mississippi drove to a remote area in Union Parish and attacked him. The assailant stole $46 and fled in Livelys car. Lively sustained a severe scalp wound facial contusions and a possible skull fracture.
Whitewright gins had received 650 bales of cotton by Wednesday night, far above last year’s 115 bales. Lint cotton priced around 9.25 per unit and seed at 15.00 a ton a year ago. Current seed price to street buyers is 45.00 per ton. Awaiting Bankhead tax exemption certificates to sell most on hand, per County Agent Gray.
Owen Sound Ontario 18 year old Lorraine Hewes recovered in hospital Monday after surgery to remove a silver fork seven and a half inches long from her stomach. The incident occurred in Owen Sound and the report notes the unusual medical emergency while a separate sentence comments on aging and beards.
Philadelphia medical professor Dr John A Kolmer promotes a new pneumonia vaccine as next target after his infantile paralysis preventer. He reports successful experiments in rabbits and humans and plans to combine paralytic work with a serum to cure the disease after infection.

The Board of Education has elected Miss Edna Hodge of Bonham as primary teacher in the Whitewright Grammar School for the September session. A Denton State Teachers College graduate, she has five years of experience at Vernon and Dublin.
Sherman reports two weeks of drought relief cattle purchases in Grayson County amounting to 16122 dollars. 97 farmers visited, 504 cattle shipped to packing centers, and 1156 slaughtered or condemned. 150 cattle per day to be bought this week with warnings against selling condemned meat.
The Tom Bean Gin Company's plant, the town's only gin and one of the region's most modern, was destroyed by a fire after 11 p.m. Tuesday. Replacement value is about 17 000 dollars. Warehouses survived. the platform ignited after the night watchman clocked 11 p.m. The plant housed four Hardewicke-Etter 80-saw stands and an Anderson-Clayton round bale press, one of only two in the area. Farmers from Tom Bean and Ida are shipping cotton to Whitewright as three gins operate there.
A major fire destroyed a cotton gin, cotton house, seed house and coal yard in Celeste on Wednesday. Fire departments from Greenville and Leonard assisted the local force. gin damage was about 25 thousand dollars. Origin undetermined.
Grayson County officials and five city mayors met in Sherman to urge the Forty third Legislature to authorize sale of the remaining nine and a half million dollars of the twenty million dollar relief bond issue.
