The State Health Department mobile X-ray unit comes to Whitewright on Friday August 30 from 8 30 to 5 00 at Edwards Chevrolet on South Bend Street. Free chest X rays offered to residents 15 and up to detect chest diseases including tuberculosis and lung cancer. This marks the fourth annual visit with strong public turnout. local organizers are Mrs J C McMillin and Mrs Homer Sears assisted by volunteers.
Texas collected 653 million dollars in state taxes for the year ended June 30 1957 the Commerce Department reports. The figure ranks seventh among states and is up 30 million or 4.7 percent from 1956. Per capita tax was 73.11 versus 86.75 nationally. Dr. Lewis B. Holland, 62, of Wichita Falls and native of Whitewright, died after a long illness. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church in Wichita Falls and graveside services were conducted in Whitewright. He served in World War I and left a wife Gladys Sears Holland and children Lewis B. Holland Jr. and Mrs. Ralph Knight. He was educated at Bay lor Medical College and previously lived in Dallas and Conroe.
W M Stockton 73 a former Whitewright resident died Wednesday at his home in San Angelo. Funeral and burial will be held there Thursday afternoon with relatives from Whitewright in attendance. He was born in Celina Tennessee and lived in Whitewright from 1909, then Orange during WWI, and San Angelo since 1927. He married Della Harp and was a Christian Church member and a Mason. Surviving wife a daughter a brother a sister two half siblings and one granddaughter.
In Doncaster England a tortoise named Ossie inherits 100 pounds from the will of 77 year old Mrs Emily Wilson. The money is to feed Ossie with preferred tidbits while guardian Mary Guy, 53, her former maid, oversees the funds.
Rush Freeman district supervisor announces J. C. Bryant has completed terraces for erosion control on his Whitewright farm west of town. W. L. White has completed construction of a stock tank on his farm north of Whitewright.
The Agriculture Department announced a $3,000 limit on 1958 soil bank acreage reserve payments will apply per farm rather than per producer. The move, approved by the comptroller general, views the cap as applicable to each farm operation to curb large payments to single operations while not discriminating against farm tenant operators.

Eighty judges at intersections awarded bouquets to courteous drivers during the first annual Courtesy Day sponsored by the Allied Florists Association. Judges carried 100 bouquets but by afternoon found 70 drivers worthy as the sun wilted the remaining awards.
