A Popular Mechanics note explains that a tiny hole in a water pipe can waste large volumes. Under 40 pounds of pressure 170 gallons can leak in 24 hours through a hole slightly bigger than a pin head, while an orifice about the size of a pin head would release 8600 gallons in the same period. Test by shutting cocks and checking the meter after a half hour.
Notice that the W. T. Truett business house will be vacated September 1 and is for rent. It is suitable for hardware, furniture, or garage use. Interested parties should contact W. T. Truett.
A Bull Durham tobacco worker traveled by flivver from Sherman toward Denison and reached the city late at night after his car caught fire mid journey. With top seat and floor burned away, he rode on using a water bucket as a seat while flames trailed behind. He stopped at Central Fire Station where firefighters quickly doused the blaze with chemical apparatus. the engine was barely damaged and the gasoline tank did not explode.
The Sun retracts its claim that Mr and Mrs S E Jones returned with Mr Sears from Colorado in the same car. Only Mr Sears and Miss Gladys were in the vehicle on the return journey.
Clint C. Hearn, once a West Point graduate from Grayson County, appears on a recent list of brigadier generals appointed by the President. Local observer F. M. Puckett recalls his West Point start in 1887 or 1888, his rise from colonel to brigadier general, and the likelihood he may be sent to France, a point that Grayson County will share in through his service.
Dr. R C Andrews of Floydada died Wednesday at Floydada. He was 82, a Confederate veteran and aid-de-camp on General Maxey's staff. Survived by widow, two daughters, and son Dr Rainey Andrews of Floydada. Brother of M H Andrews of Sherman. funeral held in Floydada.
Director LaVail announces a free public concert by the White Wright band on Saturday night September 1st in the city streets. The band, reorganized under Mr. LaVail, invites everyone including country visitors to enjoy fresh music and refreshments.
A postcard dated August 13 from Mrs W T Sears at Los Angeles asks for paper delivery there until settling. She reports returning this morning from a trip through Yellowstone Park praising its beauty and grandeur and says she leaves today for San Francisco.
Dr. H. F. Bone of Sherman died suddenly last Thursday at Winona Lake Indiana during a health visit. He is survived by son Henry Bone and daughter Mrs Wharton of Sherman. The body was buried at Greenville Texas.
Lee Kirkpatrick purchases J Monroe Bryant's share in the drug business they have run together for five years. Kirkpatrick will continue the store solo, while Bryant plans to seek another livelihood after his vacation ends.
The Leonard Annual Picnic is denounced by the local W C T U for alleged commercialization with intoxicants gambling and side shows. Prostitutes are claimed to gather at the event and demoralizing influences are cited, prompting a call to abolish or restrict the picnic. A Leonard citizenship meeting is planned to discuss the issue.
Judge Robert W. Winston argues a hypothetical if the United States had stayed out of World War I. He warns that a German victory would reshape Europe and force America to confront a future of weaponry, indemnities, and a moral battle between civilization and savagery.
George Gowdy and family attended the funeral of J W Goree in Paris on Wednesday of last week. Rev J F Fender aided in the services as a friend of the deceased. Goree, born June 26 1862 in Georgia, moved to Texas as a boy, married Mary Gowdy in 1892, worked as a railroad bridge builder and florist, lived in Whitewright before moving to Paris nine years ago, and is survived by his wife, a son John, and four daughters Ruth Pearl Mabel and Sarah.
Mrs Raymond Carter of Gun ter visited Mr and Mrs J M Carter here during the week, staying with the family a few days and sharing memories.
Word reached Denison of Ty Tippet's death near Henderson's ferry between midnight and 1 am the night of the shooting. Tippet and Wadkins allegedly carried a large whiskey haul across Red River when confronted by Woodville city marshal A. E. Tarry and a U S marshal. Tippet died instantly. whiskey was seized and Wadkins was jailed in Woodville.
The Woodmen of the World with nearly a million members and an emergency surplus of 35 million dollars stands in a strong position to cover the expected rise in deaths during the war.

The Katy Limited and a freight train collided head on about fifteen miles north of Fort Worth last Thursday night. Engineer Jerry Scott and Fireman W M Hammock of the passenger train were killed in the wreck and several other trainmen were injured.
