Cotton prices in Whitewright 1921 to 1933 show volatility with early postwar lows, a 1921 recovery, a 1929 drop after market activity, and 1930s declines. The record lists first bale prices and daily market openings in 1920 1928 1930 1931 1932 and 1933 with notes on local and national trends.
Denison Herald reports Reverend Fleming, pastor, works in cotton fields beside farmer A W Alverson. Despite perils to cotton such as boll weevils, Alverson yields a crop larger than last year. Neighbors astonished by unusually green, productive fields and mutual praise for a good working partnership.
Two brothers from Harmony Anderson County harvest 500000 pounds of Black Diamonds on 40 acres, selling in-field at 1.75 per hundred pounds and as low as 1.25. They lined up melon truckers in Kansas Missouri Nebraska to haul in-field while claiming stronger field prices than local markets. Eamon de Valera noted as Ireland’s first president.
In Grayson County Texas farmer Alverson credits Preacher Fleming with miraculous help on 73 acres of cotton. Fleming works long hours from early morning into evening, visits the sick, and deflects credit to the Lord while maintaining a steady crop under sporadic showers and labor.
East Texas State Teachers College holds its largest class as 520 graduates receive degrees in Ferguson auditorium on Sunday August 22 with Dr. James G. Gee as speaker. Baccalaureate service and commencement share the day to avoid overnight stays. Vera Fana Allen Sallye E Hamilton and Georgia Agnes Robinson earn master of science degrees. Willa Jean Hunter Lyons pursues bachelor of science.
The VFW Auxiliary Post 7111 met in special session to elect officers for the coming term. District President Emma Moore presided as Florentine Harrelson was named president with Emma Jones as senior vice president Maurine Tillet as junior vice president and Billy Hatfield as chaplain Marie Anderson as secretary treasurer Pearl Alexander as conductor and Mary Lou Thrasher as guard. The group voted to move meetings to the first and third Thursdays monthly and urged all members to attend Thursday night August 19.
Revival meeting by Mr. Lovett starts Friday Aug 22 at the Church of Christ here. Daily services at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. for ten days. Lovett's home is in New London. Public invited to attend.
Up to Wednesday night seven bales of cotton had been ginned and sold in Whitewright, five more than a year ago. Cotton brought 31.25 per bale and seed at 75.00 a ton with seed market unsettled and mills slow to bid. Farmers report mixed yields, some expect half bale per acre, others eight to ten acres per bale. Cotton is opening rapidly and picking may start Monday as corn crops are fair and drive plans for day and night harvesting using new corn pickers.
Dallasites were told counterfeit ten dollar notes are entering the city with a nationwide syndicate distributing them across the Southwest. Dallas Treasury agent Leo J. Williams described the fakes as nearly perfect and detailed four identifying features including a G Treasury seal from Chicago, red ink lines, odd back-side numbers, and small print codes F399 or B388. The spread started in West Texas and has moved eastward.
The teacher retirement system reports 2062 Texas public school teachers drawing retirement pay and 59 on disability pensions. Executive secretary Mrs B B Sapp notes monthly income near 1,000,000 with 128,740 paid to retired teachers, average 63 monthly, some up to 180. The system holds 63,064,000 in municipal and government bonds yielding 24 percent.
Floyd Badgett and Wallace Wilson run a moving business known for handling large tasks. They moved a 93 foot river boat around Denison dam and transported six steel tanks each over 75 000 pounds. Badgett recalls a past failed ice house move and jokes about proving his skill with a current challenge.
Sherman news reports Standard Oil Company of Texas sustaining 1300 barrels per day from 17 wells in the Sherman field averaged 80 barrels per day each. Oil sold to Texas Pipeline Company for northern refiners at about 2.65 a barrel with gravity 0.35 to 0.38. This month marks the first anniversary of the discovery, Aug 25 1947, with No 1 Covey Bates finaled at 3778 feet and new Mary Rifenburg sand found near 4300 feet.
College students enrolled in ROTC before June 24 1948 will be deferred from the draft until after completing the course. They must stay in good academic and military standing. The Army and Air Force quotas total 118 600 across 231 colleges. deferment requires agreeing to accept a commission and serve at least two years on active duty as an officer.
Peterborough Ontario witnesses saw ten and twenty dollar bills blown across sidewalks by two small children in a car. Everett Moss, a grocer and father, had deposited Saturday's receipts earlier and later found about thirty dollars missing after the youngsters opened the glove compartment at a downtown insurance office.
At a Whitewright Board of Trustees meeting James Petrasch of Italy was named principal of Whitewright High School for the coming term. He previously led Italy High School as principal and athletic director, holds a bachelor’s from Trinity University and a master’s from North Texas State College, is married with a six month old son, and will coach the girls basketball teams.
The Civil Service Commission announces examinations to fill a substitute clerk vacancy at the Whitewright post office earning $1.29 per hour. Eligibility requires residence within the post office delivery area or bona fide patronage. Applications available at the post office or from the Director, 14th U.S. Civil Service Region, Dallas Texas.
The National Safety Council reports teens under 20 have an 89 percent higher fatal accident rate per mile than all drivers. It urges driver training in high schools and colleges and calls for better driving examples from parents and older motorists.
Luther Gordon has sold his Whitewright grocery to Lee Wilson who plans a sandwich shop after stock clears. Wilson, formerly in Whitewright cafe business, then in trucking, will retire Gordon after nearly forty years in groceries.
A Chicago business paper piece humorously outlines how a typical man encounters taxes in everyday life. The spoof follows John Q Public from alarm clock to work to travel purchases, detailing price tags, taxes, licenses, and the implied inheritance tax if he dies.
The tenth annual reunion of Grayson College ex students will be at Whitewright High School this Sunday starting 10 a.m. The program includes songs, invocations, remarks by Joe B. Hamilton and Mrs Ida Dillon Parker, and brief addresses by J N Russell. Lunch at 1 p.m. with an afternoon of visiting to follow.
Sherman centennial organizers call for county entries for a Dairy Queen pageant to be held Sept. 9 with town winners parading downtown and dining at the Grayson Hotel. Contestants ages 12 to 18 wear homemade cotton dresses and may perform a cow milking demonstration. Prizes exceed 50 dollars in merchandise.
